Rear Storage Compartment?
My dad just added a 1999 4Runner Highlander to the collection. We were looking at the rear compartment on the inside and had a question. There are two straps and a formed indentation. What went here in stock form?
Thanks!
Thanks!

The jack kit goes under the rear seats, but most people often mistake that as a place for the jack to go. I supposed you could put it there, but its the wrong place.
Godzilla got it right, its for the reflector kit. You could put whatever you want in there though, but its not rated for much weight.

I like the rifle idea too.
I think I remember reading in the OM or FSM about an optional reflector set like the one pictured. I've seen those reflectors pretty consistently in airport shuttles, rented trucks, etc. I'd guess it's a requirement for commercial vehicles since it's so consistent. At least in CA.
Here's what I put in mine. It's always nice to keep more floor space available for heavier stuff by mounting lightweight things up on a bracket.
Like the man said, 30' towstrap. The green med pouch has epoxy and other small repair items. It looks a little precarious, but it really does stay put. The larger green thing is a cheap Czech army surplus shovel. Small enough to pack, but I'd prefer a full sized shovel on an extended trip, or a trip in difficult terrain.

My Brazilian Hi-Lux has the same cubby and the reflector comes stock. Brazil requires reflecting triangles in all vehicles, as do many other countries. You also get a neat little fire extinguisher under the front seat. This goes back to when half the cars in the country were VW Bugs whose air-cooled engines liked to catch fire in tropical heat.

Was wondering about those straps myself, but if you have a 96-98 4runner (gen 3 flight 1) then you have a tiny stowage compartment that won't have those straps BUT ... I did the mod and show you how to do it! Check out my install here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/m...runner-180108/

I used an air body saw to cut out all the indentions for more room. I wasn't going to use the straps anyways and now I can fit a 2.5 pound extinguisher, real 30' tow strap, gloves, couple flares, shackles and hitch pins. The plastic box compartment is plenty stiff to do without the inner mouldings.
