Rear panel
Above the rear door, on the inside there is a panel that has two grill type cut-outs? Are there supposed to have speakers there?

Yeah the "premium" sound has them...they are really crappy speakers though. I had the originals in when I bought it...they were paper coned, just like the front  and the paper was practically destroyed. They are 5.25" (5 1/4) if you are looking for replacements. if you had the premium sound, remember to run new wires or bypass the amplifier.

Those very rear speakers above the tailgate are not 5.25". I think they are more like 1" or 2" or something like that. I don't know exactly what sizes there are when speakers are that small, but I know they aren't very big.

Oh sorry I was thinking of the ones in the back area...yeah those little ones up there...I'm not sure what they are, I disconnected them but I never checked to see what size they were. I would bet they are tweeters if anything.

Thanks, I want to replace the entire sound system anyhow. I have a clarion cd head unit with a power acoustic 'gothic' power amp and a crunch amp together with two 12" bass speakers enclosed. I will replace all the existing speakers with a better quality of the same size. I now know that the rear sides have 5 1/4 inch and the top can be replaced with tweeters. What size does the front dash have, and what is the easisest way to get to them?

5 1/4"???? If we're talking about a 2nd gen, the largest factory speaker in the whole vehicle is a 4" (at least in my 93). Here's what is behind the rear side panels.
Mine has the option above the rear window. These like a 2" full range speaker like CTB said. 2" Paper cone + foam surround = crappy sound. For a factory option in 93, it wasn't all THAT bad. (when new). IMHO, those speakers above the rear window just get in the way when packing the cargo area.

I think it also depends on what year your 2nd gen is. Mine has 5 1/4" in the side rear, but doesn't have those little tweets in the rear pillar. The front ones are size 4T.

I have some nice Alpines in the two spots above the rear window (my truck had 6 brand new Alpine Speakers when I bought it) but I have no clue what size they are. I haven't had any need to take them out or replace them, because they sound absolutely awesome!!! I've actually been thinking about swapping out the speakers from the 4Runner into the Xterra, but I'm afraid that if I take them out that they'll be the wrong size
