Rear Heater - 1st Gen

My '86 4runner rear heater blower doesn't turn on. I am trying to troubleshoot it now.

Is there a seperate fuse behind the glovebox for the rear blower? Where is the relay located? Do those switches go bad? Anything else that could be wrong?

According to my '85 FSM wiring diagram, there is a relay and fuse (20A) for the rear heater. Not sure where they are as I've never had trouble with mine. 1st guess would be the fuse/relay area in the driver's side kick panel, 2nd guess in the center of the dash, passenger side, where the A/C relay (and a few others) is/are.

Thanks for the info!

I took it all apart and the switch and relay are fine. I am getting 12V at the heater but the blower won't turn. I think the resistor is fine.

Does anyone know where can I get a replacement blower motor on the cheap?

I would first pull the motor apart. Its likely gummed up with something that a quick cleaning/bushing lube will fix or the brushes have worn out and need replacing.

There is also a resistor inside the heater box itself which may go south as well.

Excellent info on the motor!

Now the only problem is how do I take the motor out? Do I have to drain the coolant?

I took the three 10mm bolts out from the base and the philips screws off around the housing. I think there is one screw at the bottom than I can't get at in order to seperate the blower housing.

Has anyone done this before. Any tips?

I pulled out the resistor and it looks okay to me. No burnt coils and I had continuity across it. Do I have to bother measuring resistance?

what I have found so far.

Been dealing with my own heat/power issues for the front and rear heater on an '88 4Runner. In North Dakota, they are needs. Supposed to be sub-zero this week. My wife bought this truck as a coming home/b-day present.

First things first..... Anyone who has a cooling leak and uses Bar's Stock leak or any other similar product deserves to be tied to the bumper and drug threw the cockle burrs or what ever else you can find. A leak is a mechanical problem that needs to be taken apart and fixed. Stop leak plugs up small passages. Including heater cores and radiators.

Second.... One my rear heater I had power to the relay, but nothing to the blower motor. Taking apart my relay, everything worked just like it was supposed to, expect I didn't have power across the contacts....Hmmm....Were they burnt? Nope, just not making contact. Used the electrical tester, bent the movable contact to make contact with fixed contact, now the blower motor works on high and low speeds.

Third....On my temp control lever. The cable that went to the water control valve in the engine compartment on the fire wall was binding. In part to a sticky flow control valve. As a relust this was not allowing the tmep lider to move al the way to the right for full hot. Something that was affecting the amount of heat coming out of the heater. for now this flowvalve is by-passed and the cable is cmpletely disconnected on the slider.

Now, if someone can just show me a picture of how the waterlines are supposed to hook up to the motor, I would be ecstatic.

Rear heater connects in parallel to the front heater.

4-cyl, inlet: upper-left, return: lower-center
