Rear Diff. Size??

Rear Diff. Size??
I am needing to know the size of my stock rear diff. on my 96 4runner 4x4 with no locker M/T. I have seen threads about people saying they have a 7 inch or an 8 inch.... what part of the diff. is measured in determining the size in inches? The top to bottom of the rear pan? The pinion gear inside? Anyone know what stock rear diffs. for 3rd gen 4x4 runners are off hand? Thanks.

rear diff size
I have a '97 4Runner and am running into discrepancies as to what size I have. It is my understanding that I have an 8", but is it the same ring/pinion diameter as earlier 8" rears?

Yes, it is the same 8" ring and pinion that Toyota has used in 4WD trucks since '79. It is not the same as the 8.4" found in Tacomas (w/o e-locker), T100's, and Tundras. If you are 4WD, the front is a Toyota 7½" ring & pinion, the same used in front of all trucks/4Runners since '86 and the rear of 2wd pickups since '79. Toyota is very efficient with their parts. The 7½" and 8" diffs found in RWD Celicas and Supras also use the same gears but in different housings.
