Rear axle seals and new drums now shakes when braking.
Hey guys.
I just replaced my rear axle seals, inner and outer. Had new bearings and retainers pressed on at a machine shop. Truck drives fine, however when I brake I get a vibration that is felt in the truck, the brake pedal but not the steering wheel. Im thinking its the cheap autozone drums I decided to try.
Question is could I or the machine shop screwed something up with the axles and bearings or seals that would cause a vibration only when braking? It doesnt seem likely but I thought I'd ask you all.
I still have the old oil soaked drums, which I may clean well and reinstall to see if the vibration disappears. I dont think I should have to pay for new drums and then pay to have them turned. Could almost get the stock ones at the discount prices that are sometimes available.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Steve

The drums would my prime suspect. Like you suggested, clean up the old ones and see if that solves the problem. If the old ones are in decent shape, why not just use those? If that fixes the problem, I would get a refund on the drums from Autozone. If drums are warped when they are new then that is probably a reflection of their quality and turning drums that are junk to begin with will only make them more prone to warping.

Hey thanks for the help! I did clean the old ones and they went on and didn't need much adjusting, smooth as a whistle so I got my money back no problem. Hope this helps folks in the future.
Thanks,
Steve

This can be a common problem with aftermarket drums. This happened to my friend on his civic from ones from napa. The whole car almost vibrated to pieces. My mechanic put a micrometer on the hub then spun the drum and we could see just how far out some areas were.
