Is this radiator cap bad?

Is this normal?<br/>98 4Runner. I got home and heard the coolant boiling and over flowing from the coolant reservoir. Lost about a gallon.

What is all that dirt from??

The only way to really test a cap is with a coolant pressure tester.

Ones that look perfect fail ones that look really bad are fine.

After market caps have been real junk lately.

I get mine at the dealer anymore.

Doesn't look good, If in doubt replace it cheap compared to what could happen . ,, while the cap is off check for bubbles while the engine is running. If bubbles, investigate for POSSIBLE head gasket failure

It's not dirt.

This is a new one from Napa. So now there's a piece of the cap in the coolant. Time for a flush right? This sucks! We're supposed to get a bunch of snow this week.

Ha, you figured it out. Mine did that but the pieces were still in the radiator neck so they was easy to get out. You've prolly already looked, though.

Hopefully that Napa cap works better than the Auto Zone one I was stuck with buying. It lasted a whole year, woo. hoo. Luckily the second time the Yota dealership in town was open that time. All good ever since.

I don't think the missing piece can go anywhere but the area at the top of the rad.

Ya its no big deal if a lil piece like that is in the upper tank. And a flsuh wont get it out anyways so just fill it back up with coolant and water mix and burp any air out of the system and run it. See if it doesnt over heat sn hope there i no damage to the motor. You said it sounded like it was boiling over? And yes aftermaket caps suck really bad so get one from the dealer. Bad caps and low coolant levels from failed caps have been known to overheat motors and warp heads and ruin head gaskets. Always keep an eye on your coolant level!

So I'm flushing it right now and not finding that little piece. You think if I took off the radiator and flipped it upside down it'll come out?
Which way does the coolant flow? From the top hose to the bottom? Oh and I took out the thermostat so it immediately starts flowing.

Yeah, it's not really going to cause any issues. Other than you worrying about it, I guess. But it's not worth the effort of taking the radiator out of the car to shake it out of there. Just put a good cap on it, fill it with good coolant, and call it a day.
