R.I.P 3.0...you were good to me.

After 163K fun filled miles and its second head gasket, its time for a new engine.

With death comes new life. Many call this a better engine and its time for a change. The plan is to swap in a 5VZFE 3.4 as soon as I get my hands on a donor. A thread documentiing the process will soon follow. Comments, words of encouragment, and advice is greatly appriciated.

R.I.P. 3.0, you were good to me.

Nice, but the ECU and tranny would be handy too.

how did the 3.0 die? Hydrolocking which caused window'ing of the block, breaking rods, hole in the pistons, or what?

Well, it hasn't died quite yet. My guess is that eventually it will hydrolock. It sucks in coolant and blows white smoke out of the exhaust. The oil is milky.

I say wedge a stroked and bored out big block in there - something like enginemasters did - a 454 made into a 496 churning out 700hp - on 91 octane! Of course then you'd need a BEEFY tranny of some kind...I dont think a 4L85-e would cut it...LOL

The idea would be to STOP driving it & find you another motor NOW, that way you may be able to salvage the one you currently have, rebuild it in your leisure & recoup a little money from selling it.
Other than that, damn nice photos of your out playing some water sports & trailing!! That looks COOL!

Well, dosn't that just suck! Your 3.0 wasn't even broken in yet! Yes indeed, water doesn't comress in a cylinder, however, I don't believe she's hydolocked, Another HG comes to mind! The swap will set you back around $5000 or more!
Good Luck!

5k.... not even close. We just picked up a 97 4runner for $2500, with front and side damage. We drove it about 200 mi, it runs and operates flawlessly, in fact I will be buying one of these for my DD. So we will yank out the motor trans, and sell/part the rest of the truck, hopefully it comes close to paying for its self. Its more work to change the HG on a 3.0 and you will end up with a 3.0 in the end. So we will in the spare time change the hg in the 3.0 and sell that. I figure we will spend 3500 and then we get to sell a 3.0, trans, 2 tcases and an entire 97 runner minus engine and trans.
The swap starts this weekend there will be pics

Wow! As I was! Most posts that seen cost $5k to do the swap for everything. Don't forget about the ecu from the donor!
Good Luck!

Thanks we got pretty lucky finding such a nice truck, and we dont have to ship the engine around, and we can sell what we dont use. Plus its nice to have the entire donor so we cant forget anything.

Sounds exactly like what happened to me. Stop driving it ASAP. Call Toyota and verify the HG repair campaign. Otherwise your looking at aleast replacing the HG.

'92, sorry about your troubles and I hope you get it sorted out soon.
BTW, what kind of tires are/were you running? They look wicked sharp on your rig!
