There was blue smoke coming from the car and they said that it was oil burning somewhere.


They need to replace the valve guides, valve stems, valve seals, and rings. Anyone have any idea on how much that it would cost? And how long a mechanic would take to fix it>?

well if its what they said (probably not all of them) then could take some time.... to do rings you gotta basically take the engine apart, which aint cheap

Did they rule out the smaller things first? Did they do a compression test and leak down test? What engine do you have?

[go for a full belt change, oil change, filter while you are at it, all that is coming
off anyway. radiator flush instead of just replace fluid]


I am guessing a thousand bucks or less.


then again it could just be one blown valve.


or as simple as a pcv valve which is 30 bucks. so find out for sure

Well as in they it was really my mechanic friend. Ill take it into my Toyota Dealership that has is top notch and has helped me out a lot to have them look at it and do everything. I just wanted to know a ballpark figure.

A ballpark figure is hard to calculate without an accurate diagnosis.

if it smokes right at startup, its most likely in the upper end, valve seals or worn guides. Smoking all the time may be from the rings, a leak downtest or a dry, wet compression test would point you in a better direction of whats up. Any repair shop should be able to do that in their sleep.

typically smoking at startup or at an idle or taking off when it has been idling for a while is in the valves, could be a seal, could be a guide, could be a valve stem

mid to high rpm smoke is usually piston rings


but before you get that far into it check the pcv valve, its probably not the problem but it could be and that is the cheapest and simplest thing to check and replace

The big question is about the rings? is it a 4cylinder or 6 and is it a 4X4?

Because non-4X4 they don't need to pull engine to remove pistons with a "get-her-by-repair"..just do a light hone and replace rings...this is an iffy repair..If rings are gone..might as well do bearings...


Ballpark on an engine rebuild to do it right including ,rings, bearings,head and block machine work,parts and labor,figure on $2-2.5k and 1.5-2 weeks time wise when its all said and done.

To "get-her-by-repair",pull head(s)..machine shop them(valve grind,seals,ect),light hone replace rings on non-4X4...4cylinder maybe 1.0k-1.3k and 1-1.5 week(s) with parts and labor..with 4x4 and v6..probably 1.4k-1.7k and about 7-10 buisness days.

And really they need to know where the smoke is comming from,before anything get torn down..If they don't know...you are at the wrong shop.
So ballpark.....$1.2k-2.5k and 1.5-2 weeks time for repair.........Depending on vehical type,engine type,parts,and labor rate with machine work?

How much oil are you using, and how much longer are you going to keep the vehicle. I drove my 93 4Runner for about 2 years going through a litre of oil a month. That didn't add up to anywhere near the cost of a rebuild. If there is just a little smoke, and the engine is otherwise running fine I would just check the oil more frequently.

As a tech myself we cannot accurately give you a ballpark estimate, that is the service writer's job. We have to do checks and sometimes do an engine teardown in order to find a problem. I myself am in the middle of a warranty vs. customer pay teardown on a Cadillac with a Northstar engine. If the extended warranty refused to pay then the customer was responsible for the Engine removal and reinstallation. Fortunately it was a blown head gasket CAUSED by stripped headbolts (a common problem on certain year models) so the customer is not having to pay.
To answer your question I would say about $2k but do expect the price to rise if there are other problems. If your tech finds other things you might as well bite the bullet and consider a new engine or doing the repairs while they have the engine apart or you will have to pay more later depending on the situation. I.E. water pump, timing belt, etc.
