Questions on a "Lift"

Ive heard you guys talking about lifts and soo on.. from what I gathered there are 2 types suspension and body.. so I want to ask your opinion for the experts.. my 4Rnnr is stock. Im soo will be looking to go with a lift.. I intend to do some offroading eventually. So whats the best way for a noob to start? new shocks? I've always heard spacers were bad but several ppl have them here.. what are spacers? any and all info is appreciated.. thanks

Since 4Runners vary greatly over the years, it would help to know what year you have.

you dont necessarily need a lift to go off-roading. other things are more important, like the factory e-locker. i guarantee you can get farther on a trail with the e-locker than someone with a lift and 33s and no locker.

i would start by getting some 265/75/16 MTRs or BFG ATs or Bridgestone Dueler MTs or something like that.

also some longer front/rear shocks for more travel.

take off the running boards and maybe mud flaps.

hit the trails and then decide what you need. maybe more lift for more ground clearance. maybe you need front/rear bumpers and/or a winch. maybe a front locker, etc...

dont get a lift just b/c others have one and it seems like the best place to start. decide/determine what you NEED, then spend your $$$ where you know you'll benefit.

RT is right, you don't really NEED a lift, I've been wheeling mine bone stock for over a year and just got my lift recently. I got protection/armor(sliders,skidplate) first, then tires, then lift. I took it on some pretty advanced trails with only minimal scraping or tow hitch dragging. The rear locker did in fact get me up and over some trails that my buddy with a 85 runner on 33's had to take a few tries at.
