Questions on the DASHPOT for 1987 22re + a code 6!

Hey everyone,

I have a 1987 4runner 22re 5spd. When I step on the gas the RPM's go up, but when I let off the gas the RPM's dont's drop down like they should.

I can manually grab the throttle and twist it back and it settles down. The dashpot is supposed to control the closing of the throttle so that it doesn't close right away. It provides a delay so that the engine can throttle down and stay running. The dash put has a little hose with a one way valve dangling at the end of it. The other end has a plunger type button where the throttle rests.

I have a 1986 with a dashpot on it and the resistance of the little plunger is even, where the 1987 one seems a little hard.

I have priced this critter at the stealership for 105.34 with a part number of 22202-35050.

DOES ANY ONE HAVE ANY INPUT ON THIS PROBLEM???

I also have a code 6 on my engine computer meaning a problem with RPM SIGNAL which can be a variety of things. I have elliminated the coil and ignitor by moving parts from my 1986 over to the 1987. Other causes could be the distributor or the wiring associated with it.......

ANY IDEAS?

Thanks,

Mike

Have you checked the throttle body, linkage, and accelerater cable to make sure they aren't gummed up or binding on something?
Pop the hood and move the throttle body plate by using the linkage on the side of it and flip it open and closed and see if there is something happening there. Pull the hose from the airbox and get a look inside as well.
Just a guess.

That one way valve is the dashpot filter. If I'm not mistaken, you can take it apart and clean it.It should just twist or pull apart. There's a diagram of it in the Haynes manual. You could go to a store that sells the manual and look at it.If that filter is stopped up it won't let the throttle back down.Hope this helps.Let us know if that fixes it.Good luck!:pat:

Hokie,I forgot to add,if cleaning the dashpot filter solves the problem. Then pull the 15 amp EFI fuse located in the drivers side kick panel.I think its in the #5 slot. This should erase that code 6.Leave the fuse out for anywhere from 1 to 5 mins. Then put it back in.

Thanks

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info.

When the vehicle is off the throttle goes all the way back with a snap no problemo.

If will take the valve off of my 1986 and put it on the 87 to see if the valve might be the problem. When I sucked air through each one it seemed to do the same thing. But maybe one is pluged and not letting the air out of the little hole..

Thanks for the EFI fuse info!!!

Will try this weekend!

I googled Dashpot

I found something related to dashpots and how they function.

random dashpot page

I'll explore the Haynes manual ad see what I can find about vaccum throttle control and the chart you want.

Cool Thanks for the posts....

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the help. I was tied up this weekend installing some piaa 959's on my second gen (1995) and also taking off the running board caps, chrome fender mouldings and rinsing out all the gunk.

I will get on it this next week!

I think I will be selling my 1987 soon..............

Too many vehicles......

Hey solarcrew!

Hey guys,

I pulled the 15 amp fuse after working on the dashpot. No code 6!!!! It seems to be running better. No I did have a hose come off of the critter near the back of the valve cover, and there was black soot on the back of the valve cover and intake. EGR valve possibly...... I will check on the name for it....

I really couldn't open the filter on my dashpot without breaking it. I just played with it for a bit, sucking air through it and flexing the throttle.

I think I am still running rich. I have a black carboon buildup on the tailpipe and it smells rich as it starts.

I am thinking something with the cold start injector / valve is messed up possibly....

It tends to run better in the warmer weather. I will keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the help!

Mike, glad to hear you had some luck.It might take the ecu a little while to reset itself after pulling the fuse.Give a little time and see if it straightens out. Also,I'm looking at the haynes manual now. That valve is called a vtv(vacuum transmitting valve. It says to pull the cap off, there's a filter and a separator inside.Clean the filter with compressed air and reassemble.good luck
