question regarding the Magnaflow muffler 14 inch and 24 inch

Hi, I heard that the 14 inch Magnaflow muffler will give louder sound whereas the 24 inch will give a softer sound. In terms of performance, will the 14 inch one gets better performance than the 24 inch one since it is louder ? or both will get the same performance ?

Both mufflers flow straight through so I don't see how there could be any significant difference in performance. I've had the 14" and now have the 24" installed on my 3.4L. I ditched the 14"er because it was way too loud and annoying. The 24" is perfect in my opinion.

Go with the 24. You will like the sound. I went with part number 12286.

What exactly is the sound with the magnaflow? Does it sound like duel exhuast, or is it high pitched, or what? I really want to get an aftermarket exhaust system but i've always heard that it doesn't really sound good if you don't have a V8.

My magnaflow has a deep throaty sound to it. It doesn't resonate in the cab. Normal driving it is relatively quiet. When I nail the throttle and go to full boost it speaks with authority. You are never going to get a V6 to sound like a V8.

How does the magnaflow compare to the Flowmaster 40 series? Also, does you have do redo all the piping coming from the headers or can you just chop the old muffler out and throw the new one in there and still achieve the same sound?

A muffler shop can make any muffler fit.

long magnaflow muffler 2.25

for a 2.25, is there a 24"/30" magnaflow muffler?
I can only find triple chamber 27"/33" for the 2.25 (round).
the 24"/30" seems to be available only in 2.5

does anybody have a triple chamber magnaflow muffler? thoughts?
if you know the part number for a 2.25 24"/30" would be great

Just get the 5 x 8 oval muffler. I prefer the straight thru design over the XL 3 chamber. You can get a 2.5" muffler. It will slip over the 2.25 pipes and you can clamp it or just get a muffler shop to weld it in.

This is the one I have and highly recommend:

thanks TRDOLman and ToferUOP. Great to know that I can put a 2.5 into a 2.25 piping...that it can be welded in there no problem.
This opens up a lot more possibilities. I have read that the 18/24 is still pretty loud. I think that I will go with the 12286 (24/30) after all. It just feels right. I was considering a flowmaster 50SUV but I have been getting a lot of opinions saying that magnaflow is just better. I still don't know why.
I wasn't convinced that the 18/24 would be quiet enough to soothe my better half...right now the thorley headers and jardine sport exhaust (muffler 14") resonates like an incoming luftwaffe. I really think that the extra body in the 24/30 will be great.
would you recommend this over an 18/24 with resonators?
thanks. getting close to my purchase, finally.
best
T

If you have a question concerning your wife and noise then definitely go with the 12286. If you happen to find that too loud, you can always add a resonator later.

My question is why did you use an offset inlet muffler instead of a straight through one? But your response about significant others is what i am really interested in. I think i may go with the 12286 because she's the one who drives it mostly. I just insure it, fix it, and pay for the parts. She just opens the fuel door and fills 'er up. Actually, she isn't even giving me any advice on what she wants. I'm trying to decide between an 'Yota cat-back replacement, or spending a little less cash on the Magnaflow and an exhaust shop installation. Still searching archives for more advice.

Sorry if i Hi-jacked this thread.

If you look at the stock exhaust, it is also offset. So the proper Magnaflow is going to be offset.

I am running the 18" body Magnaflow with stock tubes and my wife likes it. Not too loud, but you can still "hear" it. But everyone's perception of *too loud* is obviously different, so you will get tons of opinions on what sounds best...

Also, searching will bring up many Magnaflow posts from the last month or two.
