I was driving home late from work the other night and hit a deer. Having my whole front end redone.

Instead of putting the OEM front bumper back on I was going to have an ARB bumper installed. Seemed like a perfect time to do it since the insurance will pay for it.

However, I just found out that there is no application for a 99 4Runner and they are going to send me one designed for a 99 Tacoma.

I called ARB and as the manufacturer they said they could not recommend that but plenty of people do it. They also said it was not tested for a 99 4Runner and that the airbags may not work with it.

Anyone have experience with such a thing and have advice/caution to offer. I am also up for alternatives but I think the ARB is due to ship TOMORROW and it's obiously something I cannot easily return.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I have a Tacoma ARB on my 4Runner and it works perfectly. You have to do a little modification to the "frame caps" being as they were different on the Tacoma. Not a huge deal.

If you plan on doing heavy winching you might want to weld on new end caps and ultimately weld the bumper to the frame so it wont move under strain and pressure of winching.

If you do a little searching you should find some writeups or threads dedicated to just this specific discussion.

I have a 99 4Runner with the Tacoma ARB mounted on it. Instillation is easy but, as benp mentioned, you have to cut on the frame a bit. The frame on the 4Runner ends with flat square "caps" that are perpendicular to the frame tubing. The ARB is designed to slide onto the ends of the frame and, obviously, these caps prevent this. All you need to do is cut off the part of the caps that stick out leaving a smooth capped rail. The ARB will slide right over and mount as if it were a Tacoma. As for the airbags, I spoke with my local 4x4 shop about a year ago when I installed mine and they said should be no problem. I have had no indicator lights, warnings, or problems with the airbags thus far. It definately makes the 4Runner look really aggressive. It's an awesome addition to your runner and a good decision! airbags are triggered by a sudden deceleration, nothing really to do with the bumper...the ARB just has crush cans which is a little softer in an impact, a plus from other bumpers.

I also have a 99 with an ARB, and it is a much more solid mount than how it mounts to the tacoma. I've had it on both.

I've been searching and searching and can't find the thread with the install detail/pics, at least not for a 99. If anyone has that handy I'd really appreciate a link to it.

I had to cut off the end plates on the frame rails with a sawzall...about 5 mins for both.

Then I drilled two vertical 1/2" holes to slide the larger bolts through for the mounts. That took about 15 minutes. After that I painted with POR-15 style paint, and slipped the bumper on.

Yea they come in black. I had this one powdercoated to match my vanity .

Like SC4Runner said, tools needed: Sawzall to trim edges, grinder to make it pretty, paint to inhibit rust, and a drill to make your (2) vertical holes through frame.

You don't need to cut off your whole endcap like is shown in the install above, simply trim the edges and leave the plate on the end of the frame.

call ARB ask for instructions on installing a Taco bar on a 4Runner, that's what i did. they have the pdf file ready to email.

i just re-installed mine yesterday because the first time i didn't do it right. should be 2 hours max all by yourself, 1 if you have a good helper.
