Question about 4runner transmission

2000 4runner sr5, auto, 2wd.
I was just wondering about the gears.
I have 'L' '2' and then Drive.
I was wondering what the 'L' and the '2' were for?

I put it in 'L' today and the rpm's shot up but I was only going around 30mph.
Also I noticed the 'ECT' button.
Was wondering what this feature was for and the benefits.

Any info would be great.
Thanks

Do you have an owners manual? And is this your first auto transmission vehicle?

Here are your answers,

L = Limits auto tranny to first gear only, thus your rpms went up quickly.
2 = Limits auto tranny to 1st and 2nd gears.
ECT Power = Electronically Controlled Transmission will change shift points to hold each gear longer for maximum acceleration.
O/D Off = Prevents auto tranny from using overdrive/ 4th gear in a 3rd gen
Drive = Normal operating mode allows tranny to choose from all 4 gears for current operating conditions. This is the setting you should use 99% of the time.

Kinda of a goofy question, but here is you answer:

P=Park
R=Reverse
N=Neutral
2=2nd
L=Low or 1st

The ECT button holds the transmission in gear a bit longer-longer shift points

No, no the R is for race, try it above 60 on the highway and see what happens
