Proper Way to Check Transmission Fluid

Hey everyone,

I've got an 01 4Runner and my instruction book doesn't say jack about how to properly check the transmission fluid level. My silverado truck has a painfully long write up about how to check it, but nothing for the yota. I figure I can assume that both would be similar, but decided to poll the experts on Yotatech. Anybody have the official Toyota method to check it hot?

It is always in the acceptable band when cold, but I tried to check it hot today and it read low so I want to make sure I'm checking it right before I add.

Thanks

The owner's manual for my 2001 doesn't say anything about checking trans fluid either. I have always checked mine when warm, not really hot, with the engine running in Park.

Go for a ride in the truck to get it to normal operating temp (If you went for a long higher speed ride on the highway, shut truck off and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before checking fluid level... If you only did normal city driving, you can check it right when you get back.)

With truck running and foot on the brake, slowly shift through all the gears from "P" to "L", stopping briefly (1 second) in each gear, then back up from "L" to "P". Leave truck running (in "P") and go check fluid level. It should be between the two hot marks.
