Pre-Runner
I have been researching and discovered insurance for me, a 19yr old male with perfect record, is extremely expensive for a 4X4. I have found some nice 2WD Yotas and one of my friends specialized in Baja Trucks when he lived in Cali, and offered to help me build a truck. If its just RWD will it be able to overcome obstacles, or am i just setting myself up for disaster? It would have custom coilover susp., skid plates all around, full rollcage, brush guard, 33'' tires, Off Road lights, and powered by a 4 cylinder. Thanks again for all the great input. -Matt

There are many factors that go into pricing insurance. The BIG one I was told was the value of the vehicle... so, there are a couple things going against you... You're 19, it's newer, and it's a 4x4. I have a '91 4Runner V6, I'm 19 and my insurance for full coverage is reasonable (I think), /mo. i's about $134 for full coverage. Now... on my gixxer... that's a different story! hahaha. With that thought in mind... my insurance is lower because I get a multi-policy discount (bike and truck)... so, looking at your avatar... it looks like you have a Yamaha...?? Try to get ins. with the same company you have your bike on.
I can't fully answer your real question, but, I guess it just depends on what you'll be wheelin' over. I love my 4x4 though... it's nice when you REALLY need it! Hope that helped a bit.

The main thing a 2WD truck like that is good for is going fast over the desert. In snow, mud, and rocks you will most likely need 4WD. However if you have a 4WD truck with a longtravel kit then it will be pretty capable all around.

All depends on what you're going to use it for. Plenty of threads in the archives related to 2wd offroading, and if you go that route, a locker, tires, and momentum are your best friends. Like the guy above said, 2wd trucks are really only practical in desert racing and even then your talking about HIGHLY modified 2wd trucks.
If you've got your heart set on doing some serious off-roading, then get a 4x4 and find a way to get a good deal on 4x4 insurance. Otherwise deep down you'll regret your purchase and every mod you do to your 2wd will be in vain, since it will never be able to do exactly what you want it to do.
Yes, I speak from personal experience.

if you are going to go fast in the sand, desert stuff is cool, for a 4x2... my trucks a 4x2 and i have it set up pretty decently, however when i cna i am converting it to a 4x4... the good thing about that is that it will still be registered as a 4x2.....
