Power locks/keyless entry & remote start problem
Hey guys, need some help here. I have a 2000 4runner Sport Ed. with about 97,000 mi. I bought this truck last April, and am the 3rd owner. Owner 1 had a remote starter put in it, and I believe it is now non-functional (the antenna in the windshield is disconnected, other wires under the dash are disconnected), and I do not have the remote. Owner 2 bought it, fixed some body damage, and sold it to me.
My problem is I can’t get my factory keyless entry to work, and my power locks are very limited in use…..Here’s the details:
- Power locks only¬ work when the key is turned to the on position. If I want to lock all the doors I have to either A) lock them while the truck is running, or B) turn the key on, push the lock button on the door, and turn the key off AND remove it very quickly or else all the doors will automatically unlock themselves ( anti-lockout feature?).
- I have tried to re-program my factory remotes (with fresh batteries) but am unable to do this because the reprogramming procedure requires you to cycle the locks without the key in the ignition, which I cannot do.
I think these problems are related to the remote starting system, which I would rather get rid of.
Questions: Does anyone have any ideas about what I could do to remedy this?
Can I just remove everything associated with the remote start and still have all of my wiring intact? (Do remote start systems create new connections, or do they just piggyback off existing ones?)
I’m not electrically savvy so I probably wouldn’t be able to run new wiring if needed, but I can sure as hell take apart splices and other connections. I just don’t want to create bigger problems for myself by pulling the remote start.
Thanks for reading this and any help you can give. Let me know if I need to provide more information.
