My 1994 4x4 Pickup has been getting what I think is pretty poor mileage since I bought it. I am averaging about 18 City and 19.5 Highway. I was really thinking I should see higher than that. The truck only has 90,000 miles on it and it is completely stock except for some steel wheels and 30x9.50 Tires. The shifter shakes at idle and the truck doesnt have much power, maintains 65-70 up a decent hill at full throttle.

What kind of mileage should I get and what should I check that might be cuasing the poor mileage? Thanks a lot.

If that is the V6 engine you have that's actually pretty good gas mileage for that engine.

If it's the 22RE I believe that's around average.

Either way you're lugging around a 3500 +/- truck with an older engine.

What type of oil do you run? Have you serviced your rig lately? New Air filter, new plugs, oil change? What type of driver are you?

Sorry guys, didn't realize I left out some information. It is the 22RE and it has been serviced recently. New plugs, cap and rotor, K&N cone filter, and I run Castrol High Mileage oil.

I have what ever gear is stock. Is that 4.10 ro 3.73?

I was really hoping for both city and highway mileage to be in the 20+ range. The guy I bought it from had the distributor off a tooth and I fixed that and reset the timing, which helped hgihway power some, but didnt seam to have much of an effect on mileage. I do think the valves migh be a little loose, I can hear them tick. I havent got to setting those yet, but I dont htink that is going to effect mileage too much.

Could this be an oxygen sensor or clogged cat related problem?

Should be 4.10. You're mileage isn't that far off. When I had my 22RE, I was getting 18-23 highway and city. Try some Seafoam in your tank, should help er out. Other than that, it seems fine to me.

I put 240,000 miles on my 22RE. I got 19-20 everyday mileage, 22-23 highway trips. You're heavier. I doubt you'll be able to get much better than you're getting.

It should idle butter smooth though, maybe try some seafoam? When mine got to idling rough plugs and rotor and cap made a huge difference. Plug wires twice in its life - and go with dealer parts - they cost more but I could never get it run right on aftermarket wires. ND plugs (get em at the dealership) were a must - it lost power with any other brand. Cat is a possibility but not likely.

I've got a 93 4x4 PU, 22RE...112k miles. Just bought it a month ago. I was only getting 16 MPG highway. Ran a few tanks of cheap injector cleaner and replaced the spark plugs. The last tank was up around 18 MPG highway. Just put some Seafoam in the tank this weekend to see if that helps. There's a large thread on here about Seafoam and how to use it to clean your injectors and top end. You may want to try some as suggested earlier.
If you have oversize tires don't forget to compensate for the speedometer/odometer error. I have 31.5x11.5-15 and my odometer is off about a tenth each mile I drive. So if the odometer says 250 miles, you really drove 275 miles or so. That can make almost 2 MPG difference in the way you calculate MPG.
My valves sound a little nosiy too, especially after the truck is warm. After I do the Seafoam top end clean I'll adjust them if they're still noisy. But from some of the posts on this board, adjusting the valves doesn't always get rid of the noise. Seems like some of these engines just make a little noise! If you do adjust the valves, make sure you don't overtighten the valve cover. Some owners have reported engine noise due to contact with the valve train from a overtightened valve cover.
