Please Help!!! 99 4runner Limited 4x4 transmission Problems
So I have searched and can't find anything that fits my situation. But if I have missed something I apologize.
Lately, my automatic transmission seems to be slipping in 1st and 2nd gear. It does not happen all the time, just seems like once a month or so but it seems to be getting increasingly worse. It started out as just the engine rpms increasing but the tranny wasn't responding accordingly. It gave the feeling of the tires losing traction and spinning but there was no loss of traction. And then it stopped and acted just fine for over a month. And then a few days ago it started doing the same thing. But this time it was worse. Going from a dead stop it was almost impossible to get up a slight incline. But once it gets into third gear it acts just fine. This went on for about a 2 days and now it is acting normal again. I have checked the fluid and it it full and looks good. I have tried overdrive on and off, 4x4 on and off and nothing seems to help it. It has about 160000 miles on it. To my knowledge there has not been any transmission work done on it. I bought it used a few months back from a couple that had it serviced regularly and it was well taken care of. Any ideas of what could be going on. Is the tranny going out or what? Please help!!
Update: I noticed today that when trying to shift into 2nd gear if I am trying to accelerate anything more than slow, the vehicle will shake pretty severely.

Very possible the clutches are worn out, if the fluid has never been changed that can happen. Or if it was driven hard or particularly if it was ever supercharged.
Smell the fluid, does it smell burnt at all? It should be bright red, is it a muted or dark red?

Put a couple of drops of tranny the fluid from the dipstick on a white paper towel....it should be bright, nearly blood red in color.

*Did the truck recently have a transmission flush and new radiator installed? Google strawberry milkshake.
*Is there gear oil leaking on the inside of the rear tries? Could be leaking axles seals causing the rear brakes to drag on the drums.
*A weak battery can cause initial transmission shifting problems.
