Play in differential?
I'm still having some trouble with the transmission, I took it back to the guy who worked on it to check the hard engagements I've been having. It only happens when I shift from R to D or D to R. When I go from D to D or R to R it is smooth as silk. The guy Frank said that this has shown that the transmission is not at fault here somehow. He said there was too much play in the differential and by that I think he means slack. So what does this exactly mean? What do I do at this point cause I can definately tell there is some "slack" cause when I'm driving and I let off the gas gently, I can feel it kick a little bit from the back. When I stop at a stop light or stop sign I have to ease my foot on the pedal because if I don't it will jerk and make a popping noise. If anyone could help that would be great.
Thanks.
Thanks.

5.29s will not solve the problem. If you go to 5.29s then you will have to change both front and rear diffs. You need to have new 4.88s properly installed.
How long have they been in there?

Wow! there seems to be a problem there. I have over 150,000 miles on mine and have never had a problem. Maybe you ca ntake it back to the guy that did it and see if he will do anything for you.

The u-joints could definately be the problem. Check those before you spent the cash to regear.

Send "Zuk" a PM. http://www.gearinstalls.com/. He is a member here and is very familiar with 3rd members and their set-ups. He can lead you in the right direction as to what to check and so-forth. Also like the other guys recomended inspect your u-joints.

if the gear setup was bad i think 10,000 miles on them along w/ wheeling forces would have brought out the ghost by now, just my opinion. I made a mistake installing a locker a couple years ago and the diff blew up about 200 miles later.
ive been in lots of vehicles before that had a slight jerk when shifting the auto into drive from reverse and vice versa. Do you make sure to always have your foot on the brake when you do so? the backlash in the gears (which is a measure of how "tight" the gears are meshed) is so small that you wouldnt be able to feel the transistion from the pinion touching one tooth to the next without having the diff on a bench and carefully testing it by hand. If it WAS big enough that should mean your gears are absurdly sloppy and would have likely died long ago.
I say if your driveshaft is fine then Frank is blowing smoke up your butt and just not trying to fess up to a mediocre tranny service.
also, do you have an automatic or manual locker, or any locker at all?

After reading what you guys said again I went outside to go for a drive. This time I pushed the brake pretty hard. It still engaged rough but the truck didn't jerk as bad. I normally do have my foot on the brake but not as much pressure is usually applied. Now this time it didn't always knock or kick like a bastard and sometimes it was smooth like it should be. I don't know if me applying more pressure stopped the vehicle from jerking but I could still feel and hear the hard engagements beneath me....what should I think now?
