I did search and found a lot of helpfull informaiton on doing the brakes but couldn not find something specifically on removing the pin.

2000 4runner, 5spd v6, 194,000km

I soaked it in "release all" and tried to pound it with a hammer and punch but no go. I soaked it all again before putting the wheel back on but I'm going to have to get at this in the next couple of weeks.

Anyone have any tricks? Sitting at work this morning I was thinking maybe I should have tried a bottle jack or something up against the frame... if possible?

Any assistance woudl be appreciated.

They should just slide out. I just did one yesterday and I used a hammer to get it started then grabbed the other end with pliers.

Did you remove the wire keeper from the end of the pin?

Yeah, you got to make sure you take out the wire retaining "springs" first. They are visible on the caliper, on the opposite side of the rotor, holding the springs inside the caliper too.

Mine was frozen once. I had to chisel it out and ended up having to buy a new one. It took a week for toyota to get in in. Use some grease or anti-sieze on them when you put them back in.

Yes I took the clip out.

I've had this set up on my previous Toyotas 81 and 92.. not had this much trouble though.

I will definitely put antiseize on them if I ever get them out.

You Chizelled them out? hum... Chizzel and Drilled?

We had the same issue on my buddy's 99. We beat the crap out of the pins. Then we had to grind down how it mushroomed... Basically it took a whole lot of abuse and swearing for them to come out... We used anti-seize, so hopefully its all good for next time...

I better buy some new pins tomorrow at the dealer.

new pins were $15 at the local parts store. I didn't have to go to the dealer. The more you pound on it the more it will mushroom on the end and never come out. If they are stubborn just cut them out and get new.

What is this pin y'all guys are talking about? Is it the caliper rail/guide you all speaking of?

Spending an hour or so just a squirt at a time of PB Blaster and TAP the pin. That should help it penetrate and loosen. After that, I would resort to the BFH.

X2 on the local parts store. Mine were the same way. I had to drill and beat then heck out of them. New ones for 10 or 15 bucks and some anti-seize is all you need once you get the old ones out.

How did you cut them out. Hacksaw where the pads are? and then you only had to hammer out one side at time... less resistance?

I guess I will buy new ones, release all, hammer then cut if required... stupid rust and salt!!

BTW.. the pins are the ones that stretch across the caliper.. holding the pads in but I guess the pads slide on it too.

Mine were mushroomed pretty bad from the previous owner trying (unsuccessfully) to get them out. I cut them out (right next to the pads - basically cut the visible center section of the pins off) with a dremel with a small cutting disk, then I was able to use a punch to get the remaining pieces out of the holes. I think I actually had to drill a couple of them out, if I remember correctly.

Anyways, all four of my pins were seized in there tight, and it took me a whole afternoon to get all of them out. Lots of never seize on the new pins I put in!

I bought 4 new pins this afternoon.

Looks like sunday will be spent probably cutting them out.

I've been spraying "release all" on them each night hopefully it will have some impact... I guess I should be giving them a wack as well to loosen things up to let the rust stuff work.

I had air tools so the cutoff wheel cut them in half. Once you give up on hammering and cut them out it should be easy.

We only had to cut the drivers side. The passanger side doesn't get as much salt so they came out like they should

The passenger side is the one I was working on.. haven't tried the driver's yet. hopefully Saturday am.

Just spent over an hour trying to pound those pins out! I will be searching for new pins first before I start cutting away.

Your calipers have 2 long pins that go through the body of the caliper and through the brake pads. This is what holds the pads in place.

What's going on, I'm the new guy. Glad to know I'm not the only one whose had this problem with the retaining pins. Has anyone besides gpcollen1 ever had any luck soaking the pin's and eventually loosening them?
