I have a 02 Tacoma 4 cylinder
I have been doing allot and allot of reading on trying to find the problem to this code.
however I get different answers.
some say the location of the charcoal canister is under the hood and some say by the tank.
so the more I read the more confused I become.
so I am just wondering if anyone had had this problem and what have you done to repair your system. thanks in advance because I really am interested in what you have done to your truck. this is one that I just bought two weeks ago after I wrecked my 91 yota. I am still working on that truck lol

well I replaced a gas cap from the stealership and light came back on. today I replaced the canister and a couple of hoses. the canister came with some type of switch that was on top of the canister. I don't think that this will help any but we will see.

The canister is located in different areas. On my 01 Runner, it is located by the spare tire carrier, on a pickup, I am sure I have seen it under the hood.
I think what causes them to fail is overfilling the tank. That is what ruined mine. I would fill the tank all the way to the gas cap. When I get fuel, I want to avoid filling up again for as long as possible. When you over fill the tank, the fuel goes into the vent line that is to capture the fumes, instead you are filling it with raw gas.
Now when filling the fuel tank and the gas station pump kicks off, I might round up to the next dollar by about 50 cents or so and that is it. On the other side of the equation, you dont want to run your fuel tank on empty as fuel is what helps keep the fuel pump cool. I usually fill up at 1/4 tank and rarely do I go below 1/8th of a tank.
You probably got your code fixed. It is an emission code and what came up on my canister issue.

thanks
Mine is by thd spare tire too. So I can see how this could happen. I would fill mine up all the way too. Now I stop as soon as the pump clicks off. Also I don't fill it up and part it. I always fill jt up on the way home from work so I can at least drive it 20 or so miles.
Thanks again.

thanks for the links. I think that will help me no the names of the parts so I can test them and hopefully find out the one that is bad.
I saw a truck at the junk yard I may grab some on them just to see how they work compared to mine.

I got my canister and sensors all in one unit from the boneyard when I replaced mine. I wonder when I flooded my canister, not only did I ruin the charcoal inside but may have ruined the sensors. I cant say for sure that is what all happened but is my suspicions. On the other side you don't want to run on empty as that will ruin a fuel pump as fuel is actually a coolant to the pump. I fill up at 1/4 tank from now on. Once in a great while I might hit the 1/8th tank mark but rarely does that happen.

In the pocture the little square thing under the wires. Well that little box I took it off and connected it to the battery. I replaced it with one from the junk yard. The one from my truck would not click at all. One from the yard will click. The serial numbers did not match up but I will give it a try.

if this will make the light stay off I will try and buy one from Toyota if it does not cost to much. probably will replace the some of the lines and the rusty hose clamps.

well I have driven the truck for about 1000 miles and the light is still out. I guess the part from the junk yard is what fixed the problem. the one that I took off of my truck would not activate when connected directly to the battery. I no the numbers did not match up exactly but the electrical connector was the same. so I am hoping that all is good
