P0306

Well on my short drive home last night I felt a slight studder for a split second. As I'm having issues with my flexplate (was missing a bolt and two others were loose and I now have an aweful noise which I was told "may" lead to torque converter damage) I just figured my trans was acting up b/c I didn't feel it again for a few miles. Then it started skipping more frequently, put it in N and revved the engine and it felt smooth so again I figured trans. Then it got a lot worse, CEL flashed for a few seconds then stayed on. Not quite stop and go rush hour traffic on the hwy but near to it and when I would accelerate I'd really feel it, then I could hear/feel it when coasting so I made my way to the granny lane just in case it quit running.

Well the CEL started flashing for a few seconds a couple of miles down the road and then stayed on until I got home. The total drive from when I first felt it to home was maybe 10 miles. Anyways, by the time I made it home it had a dead miss to it and sounded like a demo derby car. It had not been started for maybe 2 weeks prior, ran terrific in the morning and at lunch and half the drive home which is a 22 mile drive or so.

Pulled the code tonight and it's a P0306 so I bought some OE NGK plugs and will start there this weekend. I have another set of wires as a backup also. I found a lot of info in this thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/3...r-hour-124900/ and I hope it's something simple. I drive a 96 4Runner Ltd., auto, 4X4 and the engine has around 90K on it, the rest of the truck has 272K.

I'll post up what I found if anything this weekend.

start with plugs and wires. then check the coil pack for spark. lastly check the injector with a noid light. i had a bad injector on cylinder5 that was causing a miss. the injector was stuck open and dumping fuel in the cylinder to the point of flooding it. i did plugs and wires first. (new of course) then replaced the coil pack (new again) and had i checked the injector first i would have saved about 300 bucks.

Well I had enough daylight to get started looking and started the simple way. I unplugged the #6 wire and it still missed. I had a spare wire for that cylinder, swapped it on and no more miss!

Very happy for a cheap fix. Closer inspection of the bad wire shows where it arc'ed through the part of the wire that goes into the spark plug tube in the head. I'll get a pic and post it later.

i know you're happy about that one... i went through hell with the p0305. and because the injector was wide open it messed with the fuel rail pressure and also caused a miss in cylinder 1.

Here's where it was shooting the spark through the plug boot, nasty!

Well on my way home from work the other day the same freaking thing happened. Drove to work fine, lunch was fine but halfway home started missing and threw the code again. Parked it and took my frustrations out on a 6 pack. Ordered new wires the following day, had plugs already from when this first happened so I decided to check the wires again. I didn't find anything obvious on the factory wires but changed them with NGK replacements. Also replaced the boots attached to the coil and put new plugs in, NGK BKR5EKB-11 on all 6 cylinders. A few years ago I put in NGK BKR5EGP plugs on all 6 and below are what they look like now. I can't remember the mileage on them but it's @ 30K or so.

They're in order of the cylinders on the engine. From left going front to back they're #1, #3, and #5. On the right side row they're #2, #4, and #6. #3 had part of the boot tear off when I was trying to remove it so that's what the black stuff is. Had a HARD time getting it to separate so I could get a socket on there and then I used a piece of vacuum hose attached to my shop vac to extract the small pieces to prevent them from entering the cumbustion chamber when removing the plug.

Here's what the gap measured on the ones I removed:
1 - 48/49
2 - 47/48, broke the tip when double checking so I'm guessing 47/48
3 - 48
4 - 47/48
5 - 48/49
6 - 46
Runs like a champ now, drove about 60 miles and so far so good.
I also know better than to gap either of these styles of plugs prior to installation.
