Well I've found out that my check engine light is due to 2 oxygen sensor error codes.

1. P0130 O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

2. P0133 O2 Sensor Circuit SLow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

Is there any other troubleshooting to be done here, or should I just go with a replacement?

What exactly does bank 1, sensor 1 mean? From looking around the Kragen web site, there seems to be 2 oxygen sensors, a front and a rear. Is the front one sensor 1? Is it prudent to replace both?

That means it's the sensor before the cat. Or basically the 1st sensor from the motor. I had code PO133 and just replaced the sensor last weekend. It's real simple job. The O2 sensor is about $140 brand new!!!

I got myself a code reader this morning from Kragen. They were just as much as they were on ebay.

I'm thinking about renting it out.

Now get this: I have a used vehicle warranty from when I bought the 4R. I called them, and they said the O2 sensor would be covered, just take it to the dealer.

I call the dealer, tell them I have these codes, and want to get it fixed under warranty. They proceed to tell me that in order to fix it under warranty, THEY have to do the diagnosis.

How much do they want to read the codes themselves???


$110. What a freakin ripoff! I looked over my contract and nowhere does it say that the dealer needs to do the diagnosis. I'm not done with them yet.

The $110 isn't covered under the warranty? I'd think that it should be anyways.

Nope. The diagnosis is a separate charge, not included in the deductible for the warranty.

I just called the warranty company, and they said the dealer was right, they do have to do the diagnosis.

What a way to start a Friday.

I hate to say this after the fact Tom, but you should have spent the money on a BR-2 or BR-3. They're only $85 and they do a whole more than just read and clear codes.

Yeah Galen, I saw those and was reading those threads last night, but I don't have a laptop to hook one of those up to.

Well I sort of do, but it's my fiance''s laptop from work. She'd go bezerk if she saw me using it under the hood.

Not sure if I'll keep it yet or take it back.

Do you have Autozones in CA? They read you engine codes for free.

Actually, you plug the module into the OBDII connector which is in the passenger compartment, so no laptop roasting under the hood.

But, if you don't have a laptop handy, then maybe the code reader is the better way to go. However, used laptops that work for engine tuning go for around $200 bucks. My laptop is only a P166 with 80 megs of RAM, but it works awesome for what I need it to do. I don't use it for anything except making tuning changes with the SMT-5 and for monitoring engine conditions with the BR-2.

Just a thought. I hope you get your O2 Sensor dilemna sorted out. Maybe you can find a kind-eared/hearted Service Manager to help you out.

Oops, that's right, I didn't mean 'under the hood'. And actually, when I saw the location of the OBD-II port, I was real glad I used Zip ties to secure the power box for my CB. I just pushed it out of the way and was able to plug in. Picking up a used laptop for tuning purposes is a good idea though.

Mojo, about AutoZone..... I went to two of them yesterday, and neither shop would do it. I was told that the Republik of Kalifornia sent AutoZone a letter telling them they were no longer allowed to do that sort of diagnosis.

I think the first shop would have actually done it anyway, but their unit was broken. The second shop flat out refused, despite my begging and pleading.

I think I'll get one from Jay Marks Toyota. They quoted me $99.13 for a replacement sensor, all ready to go, no splicing in to a harness.
