Just wanted to make sure before I bought some. Will the oversize Toyota oil filter fit ok on my 3.4. Its a PITA to change, but it seems like there is nothing around it. Also to make sure, is the Toyota part # 90915-YZZB5?

I couldn't say for certain on your 2002, but on my 2000 3.4L, there's enough room for an oversized filter.

all the 5VZ-FE (3.4L's) are the same. There should be enough room for an oversize filter. I plan on adding a oil filter relocater for ease of changing the filter. Also it would be a lot less messy.

914R (and anyone else thinking about an oil filter relocation),

If you are getting the perma-cool set up, using a ford sized filter, scrap the fitings and the hoses IMMEADIATELY, and replace them with hydraulic fittings (JIC) and the hoses to go with them!

I lost my 3.0 to blowing a hose off the fitting that came with the kit. I had just checked the conections about 2 weeks before! Mixed blessing, though, since I now have a great excuse to drop a 3.4 in there!

I plan to reuse the adapter plates (mostly because I hate messy oil changes), but I'll convert to the hydraulic fittings and hoses when I put the new engine in.

I hope this saves someone else the aggravation!

Where did you mount your filter? I'm having a hella of a time finding a place to put mine to allow for easy oil changes.

My truck is a '90 SR5 3.0 V6, so I don't know if this will work on the Tacos and 3 gen Runners, but I mounted mine on the metal under the driver's side wheel well, forward of the wheel, at an angle. The filter is well clear of the wheel, and not in line with the tire, so I'm not very concerned about punching a hole in it, but I can put a drain pan under it, and catch all of the oil coming out. Makes for a much cleaner oil change!

If I have a chance, I'll try to post a pic of it tomorrow.

A little later than I expected, but here's a pic of my remote filter placement. The excess oil in the pic came from when the pressure line on the engine side went bye-bye. Like I was saying before, I like the idea, but there's no way that I'm doing it without hydraulic components next time (when I drop the 3.4 in there!).

If that's the case, you might take a look at whatever space is available behind the front skid plate. I thought about going that direction, but I wanted to keep the filter at about the same level as the factory, so that I could be sure of getting a good drain, with minimum mess. This location has worked well for me, and I figure that if I ever have any problems with rock dents or sticky fingers, I'll just fab a sheet metal guard to keep it out of sight and out of mind.
