Mack,
I installed a yellow top and the tray is big enough, but you will need a spacer to make up the height difference. You can use a piece of wood or you can get the spacer from Optima. I choose the spacer from Optima and everything fit well in my 88.

I REALLY HATE the red top.... long story, but if you gave me one new to use, I'd immediately sell it and buy a champion 4x4 dt34 - a real man's battery!
ps - the plywood spacer would work I think, but the battery try is as Mack describes - capable of fitting the optima. I'd do the blue or yellow top personally if you must go optima.

I just came from Costco and they didn't have the yellow top..They did have the red and blue tops though. But, they weren't on sale. I'll wait til they come on sale. I did purchase some 6 ton jack stands for only $17.99...They were $37 at G.I. Joe's. I also purchased a cool microtorch. They still have the come-along winch for only $19....But that's going to have to wait til next time. I love finding awesome deals at Costco.

Guys,
I just bought a Champion DT34 Spiral Battery from Sam's Club for $99.42 + CA Tax. The total came out to a little under $107.
I haven't installed it yet as I am still at work but I'm sure it works well, according to Bumpin Yota.

you need a spacer that is just under 1.5" thick to prop up the battery to the stock one's height. Optima also has a cap that attaches on the top or bottom of the battery that makes it regular height. It's really hard to find though. I looked for ages and couldn't find one. I only found a site that carried it AFTER I spent time making spacer :pat: I can't seem to find that website anymore though...

Be sure to get the 800 CCA battery and not the 650 CCA one if you are concerned about that sort of thing.
There are two Red Tops that are otherwise undistinguishable.

I run the Eliminator 1200CA, 1000CCA battery and have had little trouble over the past 7 years. It has a 9 year pro-rated warranty and with our cold winters have not had to plug it in to date. Always cranks over strong and fires up right away. Only twice in 7 years have I had to crank it twice to get her started.
As my stereo system unfolds it will interesting to see how well that battery holds up to competition. At $142@ CAD it is priced reasonably well.
