ome 906 vs PP 1' rear lift - towing

my '97 5 speed 4Runner is stock everything.

i have used it to tow a utility trailer. loaded with 700 to 3300 pounds. i never pulled anything heavier than probably 2200 pounds on the highway.

at 3300 the trailer was about to buckle the back end was sagging and braking was iffy. of course this has been covered here before.

i am about to go pick up a large BBQ smoker built to a trailer and begin catering and vending at events full time. It is supposed to weigh in at 1800# with 250 tongue weight.

plus up to a few hundred pounds of wood in the cooking and fire box,

plus my truck will likely be loaded down with pork shoulders, ribs and chicken.

realistically, i could add 1000 pounds (on trailer and in truck) to the 1800 trailer. probably wont be traveling more than 65 miles loaded down like that.

if things go well, next year i will upgrade to a unit that weighs 3450#.

to upgrade the rear springs, i am leaning toward the ome 906 (2 inches right?) but don't necessarily want to look all jacked up in the rear when their is no weight in the back.

i have also considered the Performance 1 inch lift springs and possibly adding a air bag system.

for some reason i feel better about ome's with out the air thing.

also considering a beefier anti sway bar.

thoughts?

Edit: great forum ! ! !

i have killed many hours the last two days looking around.

I tow 3k - 5k on my 4runner. It handles much better now than stock. The one trailer that I tow is about 2500# with 300# tongue weight. I pull it at 75mph, no problem. Check out my rig. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f79/gerdos-profile-85724/ the 906s are suspose to be stock replacements.
Also check out this thread. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f31/ome-906s-108689/ j-man just tryed some 906s and didn't get any lift. You should also contact MTL_4runner https://www.yotatech.com/forums/members/2548.html I belive he had 906s and changed to 890s.

I also tried the Air-Lift. It worked great for carrying the weight. I returned them because when I flexed the suspension it would sometimes pull the air line off. I also decided, after much reading, that I wanted some lift. I went with TRDs and 890s. I'm so happy I went this way and returned the air bags. I know some people on this forum have air bags and have had no problems with them and love them.

If you haven't read this https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f120/96-02-4runner-suspension-faq-73612/ you should.

of all the pages i read that last link was not one of them.

Thanks!

from that thread, page 2:

---

medium load
2" lift spring OME 906, shock N86C or N86 for firmer ride
Heavy load
2.75" lift OME890, shock N86
Heavy constant load (660lbs to GVW)
3.0" lift, OME891, shock N86

Now for the tech info. Listed in order of
diameter mm's, length mm's, #coils, weight kg's, spring rate lbf/in.
880, 16, 365, 10.2, 4.7, 500
881, 16, 375, 10.2, 4.7, 500
906, no info here
890, 15, 435, 10.2, 5.7, 190
891, 16, 420, 10, 6.4, 210
892, 18, 400, 10, 8.1, 380

-

(then later he says)

The 906's are a heavier spring rate at about
220lbs. They are not as tall as the 890's.

---

That is exactly what i wanted to know.

it's still kind of weird. 890s are taller but with less spring rate than the 906, , , but the guy says use them for a heavier load.

i guess to keep the ride level with a front lift, i won't have a front lift so looks like the 906 is perfect.

in another thread someone got just a little lift on his 99 4runner after putting the 906s on, , , but judging from the other posts saying you could get a lift with the 99 rear springs in an earlier 3rd gen, seems like that would be expected.

again looks like the 906 will give the 2 inch lift i'm looking for on a '97.

anyone have thoughts on a bigger rear anti sway bar?

Mine is lifted, but I use OME 891's with a 2" spacer with great success. I have towed a 3700 pound camper with tongue weight approaching 500 pounds with no problem at all-sometimes in excess of 70 mph.

Just towed a load of wood in my Brimar Trailer - traeler is aroudn 1k and 1/2 cord is about 2k. My PP springs did not even show any sign of having an extra load on them (400 lbs tongue weight - maybe more).

I was impressed.

If you aren't going to do anything to the front to lift it at all, then you don't want anything taller than the 906's. You can see what 890's look like (click on my signature for pics) with stock springs up front on my 96 (same ride OEM height as your 97). They will give you one heck of a rake. Even with 881's up front the towing capacity was incredible, but the unloaded rake was a bit much for me.....I went with the 906's in the end. If you put on 906's with stock front springs you'll have at least (maybe more) 1.5" of rake front to back which can probably handle 700-800 lbs before it nears level.

OME 891 or 892 with that load. especially if you're going to use if often for work and what not.
