I'm installing the lift next week and the directions look very straight forward with one exception. Revtek recommends using their spring compressor. Any problem NOT using it, but using the hook type instead??

I used a OEM spring compressor on my 4th gen. Worked perfect. (In a pair)

I used the Craftsman coil spring compressors, worked just fine other than some sore arms afterwards.

Yeah, if you don't want buff arms, or sprained wrists, use an impact wrench. I would've ,... just so happens I LIKE having sprained wrists and strong arms.

Makes it a lot easier to keep your wrists relaxed while playing the geeee-tarr.

The wrench makes it sooo nice... We would take turns compressing because it was so fun... get your favorite chair ... and listen to the beat of the impact wrench.... so soothing.... hehe.

I used the ones from Advance or auto zone. I cant rember. You can rent them there for free, you just have to leave a deposit. Make sure to get the ones that go on the outside of the spring and do your best to get ahold of an impact wrench. I couldnt imagine doing it by hand but maybe im just spoiled.

Glad to see you decided on getting one. You'll love it. Soon enough it will start looking stock again and you'll be wanting more lift...

i used one from advance or autozone too, the impact wrench isn't necessary even for stiff springs (OME 882s) but it would probably help, i used a 1/2" drive socket with about a 1.5-2' ratchet which provided plenty of leverage and you can always throw a cheater bar on it

Seriously, thanks for all the input. I know what you mean Sam, this hobby kind of gets under your skin. I already want an ARB front locker and a rear bumper/tire carrier.

I have done a half dozen spacer lift installs and I have yet to even see a Revtek spring compressor Use what you have access to, but use it safely, carefully and slowly to ensure you finish with the same number of appendages you started with.

I used a manual compressor and a plain-jane manual wrench. While Dan 90 was being nice enough to change my brake pads, I fought that Mother F'er for what seemed like hours. I ended up compressing the front passenger spring 3 times. The first time, then it came loose after I was 2/3 done, had to start over, then a third after I incorrectly reassmble the top (left off a washer.) Talk about fun. Uncompressing is almost as bad compressing.

eeek. chuckd, yours came loose? that is scary!!!

i had to compress and decompress one side at least 6 times!

but yeah ... all i recommend is that you just be sure to do a little at a time on one side, and then the same amount on the other side, so it's even.

even if you don't get ahold of an impact wrench, you'll be just fine ... it will just take a little longer, and a little more stamina. but it is definitely possible to do.
