I know Corey has talked about his off road box that holds all of his, ahem "necessities". How many people have this as a regular thing in the back and how do you secure it.

I'm aware of the built ins that some folks do but I'm thinking of a removable box or footlocker-like thing and maybe securing it to the two front tie-down rings.

Any thoughts?

I plan on using a Pelican Box in the back of my Runner, probably the 1650. I use them all the time at work and I can testify to their toughness. A lifetime guarantee doesn't hurt either.

I got this toolbox from Home Depot for $50, pretty good deal considering I couldn't find anything else for less than $150.



You can strap it down in the back of your truck or bolt it down. Before I made the bumper I use to just carry everything in a milk crate and strapped that down in the back.

They're secured with Velcro so that I can pull them out if I need the floor space.

I saw somehwre in an ad, or on a board somewhere, a diamond plate box that was designed to fit in safari racks. That is what I am wanting when my rack is finished.
Anyone know what I am talking about?

hey robinhood.. do you have your jack out there all the time? reason im asking is because i have a spot on my rear bumper to put a jack, but im debating on if i should keep it back there due to wear and tear.

I built mine in pieces (i.e. it's modular). The drawer section is one piece, the sub box is one piece, and the amp box is one piece. It can be completely removed in under 5 minutes. The "false floor" part of it is in 3 panels. I've had it for about 4 months now, and I'm still yet to carpet it - I just lazy

I love my box, but do wonder if all the gear I have in the back is slowing me down. I keep thinking I'll just trim it down to "the essentials" but then paranoia kicks in and I think "what if," so I keep a whole butload of crap in the boxes.

hehe... in the left drawer I keep all my straps (tow straps, cargo straps, etc.) and my hitch, along with a few rags and a basic tool set. In the right drawer I keep most of my mountain biking gear (blanket, gloves, boots and hat replace mountain bike gear in the winter) - hydration pack, shoes, helmet, bike tools, maps, etc.. In the center drawer I keep a towel, a road atlas and the overflow from the other two drawers.

I also have an amp, power inverter, and sub up near the seats.

No, I don't. It's always tied up in the back of the truck unless I'm going camping or off roading. I don't want it to rust to oblivion.

Just a heavy-duty canvas duffel works great for many of the necessities. It's cheap, durable, and can be easily strapped to the tie-downs. I sometimes use my Pelican 1650s for storage in back, but for longer trips use them to store lighter gear and put em on the roof rack. I use my tool bag so often that I like to have the seperate. Now that my rear shelf is built and secured, I do not have to worry about stuff flying around.

I assume you are asking about the Pelican Cases and not the Rubbermaid Action Packers shown below my shelf. Action Packers are great, but are not that durable and leak like a sieve.

Thanks for finding the diamond plate roof boxes. but WOW, they are a bit pricey. I think I will end up with the pelican's or aven rubbermaid for the lighter stuff.
