Odd problem. Need help.

Alright, my truck (1998 Tacoma 4X4 ext cab, 3.4, 5-speed) is acting like its out of fuel when theres 3/4 of a tank of fuel there. I was driving down the road today and it just died when I was accelerating. I shifted into 3rd or 4th and when I got back to the gas it just slowly died. So I got my dad to tow me home and started messing with it. It would fire but only for a second. Then it died again. I finally decided to just put some fuel in it and it started and ran fine. So, I drove to the gas station to see how much gas it would hold and it held about 5.2 gallons. It ran fine on the way home. Died once on the way to the gas station so I added more fuel and it fired right up. Any ideas?

It sounds like your fuel pump may be on its last legs. I have also seen these symptoms for extremely clogged catalytic converters and fuel filters. Do you have a check engine light on?

Buy a new fuel filter if yours is old and then test the fuel pressure if it doesn't help.

i have 96k miles on it. and i dont run it low at all. i always gas it up with at least a 1/4 tank left. should the fuel pump make noise when i turn the ignition to the ON position? no CEL either.

well, i drove it to the parts store and got a filter, came home replaced it and drove it around for a while. it hasnt done it again. so, hopefully that was it. i dont understand why it wouldnt do it on the way to the parts store though. weird. is there any way to check if the filter is crapped up? like cut in half or something? it has to have fuel pressure id think to be able to drive it around like i did.
