Angry !$^$%!@#!$ O2 sensor

have a 2000 4runner v6 with cali emission. had code 420 so finally replaced the front O2 sensor with a denso that I had to splice to old connector. Since I did this I get a surging when I accelerate only. It idles fine and once you get to speed it does fine. I disconnected the sensor before leaving work and the surging is gone. Any ideas out there? How can I test the sensor to see if its working correctly. This is really starting to pi$$ me off!!!!

Sounds like a problem I had when I first got my 97. I installed I think a BOsch o2 and the way it was designed was for an application for it to read the exhaust coming straight at it and not thru or over the top of it. It was sending me codes too. It was like the engine couldn't breathe or was like choking. Exchanged it for a different brand, I believe Denso and it fixed the prob. I also cleaned the MAF and throttle body. Good luck.

So changing this sensor stopped your truck from throwing the P0420 code? I've been getting that code for a couple of years and am yet to change either O2 sensor until I saw definitive proof that it would stop the P0420 code. Thanks!

Why did you have to splice the O2 sensor? If the harnesses didn't match up, it's the wrong sensor... Cali emissions uses a different sensor than Federal emissions... unfortunately I made that mistake by buying the Federal emissions sensor when I actually needed the Cali, then I double checked and realized I have Cali emissions... I'm an idiot.

The cheapest place for Denso O2 sensors seems to behttp://www.urdusa.com just made sure to check the listing they have for which motors/trannies/years/emissions require which sensor. Hopefully this was of some help...

He probably bought the universal O2 sens. They have to be spliced into your old plug. I did that with mine and saved around $30m so it was worth my 20 minutes of work to splice.

yea it was a denso universal o2 sensor for $70 compared to $175+ for the cali emission with a plug. when its surging it doesn't throw any codes. I found an online service manual for the 2000 tacoma (i'm guessing it has the same engine as the 4runner). They show how to test with a multi meter but not sure exactley what wires i should be testing. it shows a +B and HT wires. The plug in thier diagram is different than mine. Any input? and yes no more 420 code. whoop te f@#$in do, it runs cleaner but as long as you don't mind looking like you dont know how to drive manual transmission while in an automatic!

Ah... I know people have had problems with the universal ones in the past... but I can't remember off hand if they did something to fix it or if they just had to replace it...

you know that a cail 2000 has an AFM not an O2. But a 49 state will have an O2. I think you have the wrong part( you have an O2 where a AFM needs to be) this was a switch year for the cail/ fed 4 runners

I'm not sure what the part number you're quoting is, but the denso part number you should be getting is 234-9001 (manual tranny) or 234-9002 (auto tranny). They cost $153 (sparkplugs.com) or $171 (URDUSA.com). If you paid $70, you got a regular O2 sensor, which won't work in the front of your Cali 4Runner.

Return the Sensor ....o2 sensors are touchy and you may have a defective 1 if it was droped even 1 time or mishandled....Denso"1st time fit" all the way...
over and out

I purchased my sensors for my 2000 4Runner (cali emmissions) a few weeks ago. I've been waiting for the code to return because I haven't installed these sensors yet. It has been several weeks and NO P0420 code!!! WTF?? My truck must have a mind of its own.

As soon as the CEL shows itself - I'm replacing both sensors.
