Is this normal S/C Behavior??

Hello,

I had a new 2nd gen S/C installed in my 99 runner about a month ago and have noticed a few things. First of all, when under boost, I can smell something like an exhaust smell in the cab. It dosen't smell like an exhaust leak, or sound like one, but has a different smell to it. Also, a black residue has begun to accumulate on the inside of my tail pipe. Dosen't this mean that it is running rich? Also, one of my friends was driving behind me and noticed a small cloud of smoke come out of my tailpipe. I also noticed this as I was getting on the freeway and floored it.

I don't have a boost gauge but it feels like I am getting everything out of the S/C that I should. Also, I had it dealer installed but went over everything a few times and It seemed to all line up.

Is any of this normal? Any help or comments are appreciated. Thanks.....

If I were you I'd probably look at Gadget's website. www.gadgetonline.com. He is the SC god for the 3.4L. Sounds to me like maybe the free fmu was not done, or possibly goof'd in some way. Its doubtfull that you are running rich if you are making full boost as SC'd toyota's run lean inhearently.

It's wierd though..... I have the deckplate open and still have no pinging at all. Further, I live at sea level (seattle area) and can't get it to ping even if I try. Do you know if a leak in the S/C - intake seal could cause this, or maybe where it connects to the TB?

Do you have any other mods like fuel injectors, piggy-back computer, or anything else besides the S/C?

I think it has something to do with the newer generation 4runners. I have a 2000 Limited that has a supercharger on it for 3 years now. It never pinged once even when I did the deckplate mod about 5 months ago. I even took the resonator box off and added the TRD headers and exhaust, but it still didn't ping. My SS air/fuel ratio even indicates a rich mixture at WOT. I am still going to do the fuel mods though, because I am using the Supra MAF. Maybe someone better experienced can fill us in?

By the way, I had a problem once where a cloud of black smoke came out of my exhaust when I punched the gas. For some strange reason it doesn't do it anymore..

Make sure the dealer installed the IAC. My dealer didn't do this and it created many problems. The IAC is a little white insert. It is located below the throttle body.

See this link.

Also, as said before, make sure the FREE FMU is done. When all this was done on my truck, the smell went away and everything just behaved better.

As for the RICH idea, I feel the same way. I too get this black build up. Maybe I'll try a smaller pulley some time and see if I get ping.

Good luck.

From reading your description, sounds like you're running very rich. Check your plugs and see if they're all black and carboned up. If they are, you're rich. You can expect a little black smoke at WOT, at least a puff of it when the truck downshifts. The smell you may be getting is that of fuel maybe? I'm not sure. Running rich is not near as bad as running lean, but you need to find some way to lean it out if you can. It will give you more power, and net you better gas mileage.

You won't need it given that you're running the 7th injector, but...

Good point!

The reason I posted about Free FMU is because even although I have 7th injector kit, I do also see a lot of black smoke coming out of my tail pipe. Besides Free FMU, what else can cause that black smoke or what can I do to fix that?

Thanks!
