Normal or not?

hi all, i went to go look at a 93 toyota pick up, pretty clean. 22re and 5spd. 1 thing that bothered me though was when i was in second it wouldnt stay in second, this sticj would wanna pop into nuetral, i told the guy and he said most yotas with a lift do this, i've never heard of this and if its true can it be fixed?

With a body lift it will unless you lengthen the shifter. If it does not have a body lift I would say the sincromesh within the trans is screwed up.

The only time this will happen is when a shift fork or linkage is out of adjustment on the gearbox.
This is not normal for any Toyota and can be pricey to repair depending on the problem.
If it was the synchromesh it would be difficult to get into gear.

it wasnt hard to shift at all, and my dad didnt think it was the sinchromesh cuz it shifted fine, so it must be the linkage, is this a hard thing to fix or expensive?

Not always. On 22RE's and other rigs, the plastic bushing at the base of the shifter can wear, causing it to pop out of gear.

Desert Whomper -

The plastic bushing at the base of the shifter is something else that you would want to look in to. If this is the problem, and hopefully it is, it is a cheap and easy fix. If the guy is telling you that it is "normal" then I would start looking elsewhere. Tell him to get it fixed or walk.

my dad looked into it pretty good, the guy never beat on it or anything mostly for looks, it shifts fine and ill look at it agian tomarrow, how would i look to see if the bushings need to be replaced?

These transmissions do NOT pop out of gear. 96Runner probably has it right. Sounds like the bushing..I had the same problem with my '89 5-speed. Other than having that stupid bushing replaced, my 5-speed transmission has been bullet proof. Not a single problem. BTW, I have put 225,000 miles on mine. Still works great.

You are going to have to remove the shift boot, then undo some bolts holding the shifter in the top of the tranny. Once it is pulled out, the bushing should be on the shifter itself (I am going off memory from a Mazda PU)

Again, this is all stuff that this guy should be taking care of, not you.

The part numbers might be different for yours but the procedure should be the same. When I first got my truck it would pop out of 1st and 3rd, after I replaced the parts it never did it again.

Not Normal.

I agree w/ Christian and Jesse. It's a worn out plastic bushing. Not too hard or expensive to fix.

I'd be cautious about it. The truck has been modified and you don't know how good the mods were done. I was lookin' at a '91 MR2 Turbo this weekend...The guy had bought it over the web and had it shipped out here to EP. Someone had been into the AFM, which probably means they were running more that factory boost. Look for clues. A tranny that soesn't stay into gear is NOT a good thing! Could be the plastic bushing (mine did it on 1st gear) or could be syncros. Either way, if you want to buy it, take it to a Toyota mechanic and get it checked out. They know more than you about those vehicles.

When I bought mine the 3" body lift was causing the shifter rubber boots to press too hard against the console and the edge of the opening in floor too, making it very hard to get in 2nd, and also the tcase shifter wouldn't even go into low range. That was one problem.

But it would pop out of 1st and Reverse all the time, it was really hard to get them properly into gear. The bushing for the shifter pivot was the problem. There is a cup-shaped bushing that matches the ball shaped shifter pivot point that was not only worn out, it was brittled and broken and most of the pieces were missing. It was an $8 part and a snap to install. The bushing at the tip of the shifter was fine, but I've seen those worn out as well. Also cheap and easy to fix.

I took care of the shifter/boot/console problem by installing Marlin Crawler short throw shifter conversions on both levers. It's very sweet now.

eh its the first truck ive looked at and i have plenty more to go, this guy is kinda whacko too, he told us he wont go lower on the price cuz he woul dbe loosing money, correct me if im wrong im 17 and i know most of the time u sell a car or truck u dont make profit. anyways im looking at another in 15 minutes and guy runs a fab shop so this truck sound slike its pretty well taken care of, thx for all ur input

Synchromesh is a type of gm transmission fluid isn't it?
Synchronizers are in transmissions right?

A transmission with syncros as opposed to none, is a synchromesh system. AZStorm used the term correctly.

I had forgoten about the bushing and seat.
I replaced mine at about 150k miles because the truck was dropping out of third gear.
When I got it apart there was a bushing and a washer but no seat.It had completely dissentigrated.
It was a 10 minute $20.00 fix.

That's how I remember the GM trans fluid (sincromesh).
