newb tranny swap - with a question

Hi everyone,

I'm a limited experience newb trying to swap transmissions in my 1999 4Runner (V6 4X4) after a strawberry milkshake incident. I went to my local salvage yard and bought a used tranny with low miles that looked good to me (and the price seemed fair). They used my VIN to look up a compatible unit, and it came out of a '96 with <100,000 miles on it.

Now that I have it home, I notice something on the used unit that I don't see on my tranny. Can anybody help me ID what this thing is? Since my '99 does not have this on it, I obviously can't hook up the 2 electricals on it. So, does anybody know if I have the wrong transmission? Any information is greatly appreciated.

this is the used tranny with the mystery piece circled in red

in case the pic embed doesn't work here's a link: http://flic.kr/p/9X48RB

here's my tranny showing that it clearly doesn't have this.

sorry for the newb-style question- i've been enjoying learning stuff on this site, and am trying to get more knowledgable as i go. many thanks to anybody who can offer info!

I'm not certain, and hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but did the donor tranny come out of a 96 limited? If it did, then it has multi-mode 4WD and that might be the actuator for 4WD. Your SR5 should have a J-shifter right? If so and the donor did come from a limited, then it might not be plug and play.

Correct. Gotta match Limited to Limited, SR5 to SR5. You can't just swap year models.

DC could tell you exact years that will fit.

It's pretty easy to know what fits when you understand the differences in the transfer cases. Check out this thread.

Hopefully you can return the tranny and TC to the yard.
