NEWB (Picking up runner tomorrow)

First, I'll introduce myself. My name's Kyle, i'm 23 (more or less) and finishing up my degree at the University of Arkansas this year. I was into fast cars and got ready for a change. I was torn between a 4Runner and LandCruiser, but seeing as how I'm here now, you probably can imagine the outcome. I'm glad I found this forum, I look forward to learning from you old hats.

I'm going to Dallas tomorrow to pick up my 99 4Runner Limited. It has the only option I care about - a sunroof!!! I'm soo happy!!! Nah, just kidding, it has a locker, the only option I do care for. I'll tolerate the rest, I'm sure the passengers will like it. Anyway, it has 77K miles on it, and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow (if everything checks out okay). I was wondering if anyone could leave me some advice as to what to check for on the vehicle. I'm fairly aware about these, my father has one, and I've ridden in them quite a bit. Are there any problem areas to check for?

Thanks!

HEY DUDE!!! Wow, kinda weird to see a fellow citizen of Fayetteville on here!

I would first run a CarFax on it before anything, that seems to be a LOT of miles for a '99.

As far as certain things, I would wait for more 3rd gen guys to respond...

Where in Fayetteville do you live man?

I live in Rogers and commute to Fayetteville. I live off Pleasant Grove Road, if you know where that is, just west of Champions. When I lived in Fay, I lived 2 yrs on campus, 1 yr in College Park, 1 yr in a duplex with some buds, and now in Rogers. Do you go to school also?

Congrats on your new purchase!

Just check the fluids, and make sure all the panels are straight and have not been re-sprayed.

The only problem I can think of for the 99+ is a fuel gauge TSB.

don't really know about the 99+ as I have a 96 myself. But good job on the choice, sunroof and locker are the two things I wish I had looked for when I bought my truck.

Congrats

THanks guys! I'll post some pics when I get back. Honestly, the sunroof was supposed to be a joke.. ya know that's the option i'd be looking for if I were a mall cruiser. I would have probably rather had an SR5 with a locker, due to the seats, but they're just so hard to find. Hopefully I shall return in about 700 miles!

Hey from another fellow Arkansan. (Fort Smith here)

Congrats on the truck. I'd run a carfax and give it a really good look-over.
I just bought a '98 SR5 with the sunroof (well...my girlfriend likes it!!!) with the same mileage. I'm definitely jealous of the locker.

Have fun man, and don't tear up the Ozarks too bad!

Hey all, I just got it. Got home and have a few complaints. First of all, the wheel locks are missing on all wheels. I only have 5 lugnuts. Wish I'd noticed yesterday. 2nd, someone stole my cargo cover out of it, didn't notice yesterday either. The jack's gone. The wheels need balancing, and I also have a STRANGE problem that when the the truck is cold and i go to start it, nothing happens. I wait 10 seconds and then it starts. Very bizzarre, and alarming at the same time. The interior is wonderful, the exterior is nice too, except that on the fender flares the paint is peeling a little bit, but I guess that's probably normal. I already tried out the 4wd and the locker to make sure they work. Some asshat put on a "tornado" i ripped that big POS out of the intake as soon as I got home, it also has a K&N drop in filter, which is okay, but i'll probably get a regular paper filter for any hardcore offroading/dusty conditions that may come my way. If anyone tells you the tornado works, they're morons, i got 17mpg on the way back from picking up this truck, and i got 22mpg on the way there, driving a 98 SR5 with 100K miles on it. :pat:
