New to the world of Toyota...

In the next few months I am thinking about buying a Toyota Tacoma Double Cab 4x4. So far in my hunt (3 dealerships), these trucks (in the south anyways) have been hard to come by. I have seen a lot of them with the TRD off road package, which includes a rear (engageable rear limited slip) For someone who wants to do some offroading, but not hardcore, will the 4wd version be an overkill?

Once again I am new to Toyota's and well ... trucks in general. Been driving 4wd and AWD Subaru's for years. So dont be too rough on me. I'll learn

Thanks.

Welcome!

The Tacos have a far better set-up than just a limited slip. They have a true locking diff.

Also, you aren't going off-road if you aren't using or don't need 4WD. I guess that is a relatively harsh generalization though as there are others here with the same set-up. No harm meant. All that said, get the TRD package! It will be nice to have when you need it. You don't have to be doing "hard-core" stuff when a locker would come in real handy. It doesn't take much for a tire to come off the ground or lose traction.

Yeah I was thinking about that as I was typing my post. If I am questioning whether or not I need it, I probably dont Besides... here in Ga we have a lot more mud than rock. When you get that deep in Ga red clay, not even 4wd will help you out.

I have seen the TRD's at about 23k with auto and most of the other goodies. I couldn't believe how roomy the truck was when I got in it!

that's a hard choice. it depends how much 4wheeling you plan on doing and where you go. i've always had a toyota with 4wd and loved it when i needed it. my last two trucks (tacoma extended cab and 4runner) both came with the TRD LOCKER and 4wd. it's a nice option to have but then again, it depends where you go.

my roommate has a prerunner taco with the TRD package. he mostly hits the beaches in NC and never had a problem. he only got stuck once in really soft sand but 2wd and locker engage is pretty impressive.

post a message on the TTORA board. a great source on Tacoma's.

Thanks for the responses and the greetings. I was thinking that if I went with the TRD offroad package with the 2wd platform, I might save just enough money to throw the supercharger in there The descisions I have to make...

Anyone else with opinions?

I think that I will continue to keep on looking for the 4wd model with the rear locker, as I think having the 4wd would be nice if I ever decided to get into 4 wheeling.

My buddy Doug who posts on here some has one on his 4-Runner. It's definately more fun to drive now.
Only drawback is only being able to run premium fuel.
