New member... with a sunroof question

Hello everyone

Just traded my ’99 RX300 for a “slightly used” ‘03 4Runner V8 Ltd. What a feeling... It has less than 30K Kms (20K Miles) and seems to be in very good shape. Except that this morning it has some water in the top liner, water coming from the sunroof. A quick search on your forum indicates that there were some early problems with 4th generation sunroof. After checking a bit more, I realized that the last 6 of its VIN is 000009 and the built is 11/02.

Should I be concerned with such an early edition of this vehicle? I have three more days to cancel the sale… Tomorrow, the dealer will look at the roof, at the bad breaks and water in the right front flasher housing. Anything else should I have him look at???

Your forum looks like one of the best around (no flaming…)

Thanks

JB

Do a search for the sunroof problem...theres also a site that lists the service bulletins, not sure if that would be on there.

Either way, welcome aboard!

Welcome.

I wouldn't worry about 11/02 production I bought mine in Nov 02.

Common things with these Runners are check all of them:
1) Sunroof/Headliner rattle on uneven roads (check for that)
2) My sunroof had a visible gap after a few months so they had to re align it
3) Front seats, squeek, sometimes, rattle and even become loose on some
4) Driveline tends to jerk when you ome to a full stop and pull away, not always and sometimes less or sometimes pretty hard. Some guys had success by just lubing the driveshafts with grease, some not.
5) SOme people experienced a shake on the steering wheel at speeds between 65-70 mph. Especially with Dunlops. I had it, dropped my tire pressure to 32PSI and had rebalanced seem OK now. SOme had to redo alignment on front.

Check out these, as 1,3,4,5 have been a pain and dealers are sometimes not able to fix it ( read incompentent). Most members have managed to fix it. These are small issues but a big pain. You might also want to check http://www.toyota-4runner.org/ under problems and warranty some good fixes there.

You are the best...

Thanks a lot everyone for answering this very quickly.

I did a search on your forum during my lunch hour today. This is the reason why I decided to post it. I did found a lot of posts about the rattling/noise but not much about water. The forum at toyota-4runner.org had more entries about water problems. But I liked what I read from you…

The dealer said they never heard of any water problems about the 03-04 4Runners. The truck sat on their lot for the last three months, so they are very helpful in trying to resolve this problem. Glad to hear from bulldog that early production are OK. Other than that, I am getting 5 Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo
later this week (Dunlops are worn out to 5mm), seats are OK, drive line makes the noise but I will grease it in two weeks.

Can’t wait for next camping season, we should have no problems towing the trailer and carry the canoe. We will try to bring the mountain-bikes as well…

Have fun

JB
