Ok, I thought I was through with mods for now but.........I'm addicted. Anyways, I have a 98 4runner and called my dealer who said the bulge hoods (hood scooped, right?) didn't show up till 2000, is this right and will it fit? Also I have a jade green color and am wondering if new paint will match ok. I don't want to spend $$ on blending if I dont have to......This will add 20% more horsepower, won't it???

From what i've heard You'd need about $800-1000 to get this aftermarket. They started offering from 99+ Sport Editions.

I got quoted a price of $320 from toyota for the hood, I know I need additional parts as well. and $250 from there recommended body shop to paint both sides of hood uninstalled.

$110 plus shipping is pretty cheap and it should be pretty close to OEM and then spend the $150 in parts from the dealer you'll need and paint and it should easily stay under $700 maybe even under $600.

We had one on our '99 Highlander edition. I had to have it after seeing the hoodscoop!

the hood scoop first appeared in '99 on the toyota 4runner "highlander" before it was rebagded "sport edition".......mica jade green was all it came in that year......and yeas it will fit all 4runners 96-02 if you buy after market (like i did) you'll save money.......got it for 108.00 +s/h 120.00 saved 100.00 or so and had it painted for 265.00 installed (try looking @ car parts wholesale.com) you'll still need all the other smaller stuff from the dealer/stealership

Thanks for all the help, I was just worried about aftermarket being equal to OEM, I would hate to have a shaky hood to save $100 bucks. Any opinions on the color matching existing color (due to fading since 98)

It came in black too and '99-'00s were the only ones to have the available rear locker kinda making them pretty rare. It started as a Highlander thru '00 and then became the Sport Package then the last year was called and badged as a Sport Edition. The last year was the only one to feature the faux skidplate as part of the SE.

I have the skid,now I need the badges.

I actually got it from another member (SCRunner) here but I've seen it online for around $70 new.

For the '99+ with the "fat lip" bumpers if you actually buy the Tacoma kit (the 2002 Runners had different brackets) you will need to make some brackets to extend the plate about 3 inches with matching bolt holes but this mod (my friend made them from scrap metal and I bought 4 more bolts and nuts) will put the plate right under the curve of the center part of the bumper perfectly with a very small gap. On the 2002 Runner IMO the plate is extended down and away too much from the bumper and would just contact something alot easier which the plate won't stand up to much of a hit anyway so further out isn't good.

They'll probably have to blend in the fenders so be prepared for shelling out some more cash. Its worth it!!

Would the scooped hood fit a 2nd gen? I think I've seen that kind of hood on one of the 3.4L swapped 2nd gens. I'd probably have to do some modifications to the hood, right? I want to go this route when I swap my 3.slow to a 3.4L. Thanks! (sorry to hijack)

I have a 99 sr5 with the hood, so they did indeed come with them prior to 00.

I have a black automatic, I bought the truck used, but I know it originally came stock on that car.

Again, you can leave it carbon or paint it any color. The scoop is also open if you want to make it functional. I've shipped a few of these and they never get damaged during shipping, since they can't bend.

If you decide on the Toyota™ hood, get it from a dealer because there is a good chance it will get bent during shipping if you order online. I have two friends this happened to and that isn't fun.

thanks for all the advice, I really hope I dont have to blend the paint, if it comes out looking like the inside of my door jams I think I'll be alright. A friend recommended maybe getting the fenders buffed to make it match a little better, any comments on that?

Know where Ridgecrest is? haha, thats where i grew up! Anyway, yes, when you do a 3.0 to a 3.4 swap, the engine sits slightly higher and its basically a known fact that you have to modify the hood to accommodate the 'new' engine but a simple hood scoop will work great. and its surprisingly better than i thought. Its looks pretty nice too. Anyway theres a big write-up of the hood mod (engine swap) somewhere on the internet and from what i remember you only need about 1" of extra height in the same area a hood scoop would be.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but can you maybe go to a junkyard and find one then bolt it right up? Or am I missing a few things? I thought they were all just bolt on for the early 3rd Gens.

You could bolt on a hood from a 3rd gen 4runner to another 3rd gen 4runner, I think it would be hard to find one in good condition and same color in a junkyard
