new gears, need help!

hey guys, I need a little bit of help here.

My truck is a 98 4 cyl 4x4 manual tranny with stock 4.10 gears and running 285/75R16 tires.

The truck is under-powered and sometimes you need to make a hard acceleration and that's where it sucks...

Any way, I'm gonna have it re-geared, but I can not make my mind to what size gears to go.

Does any one here have this same set-up and what have you used (4.56 or 4.88 gears)?

I do not drive that much on the freeway, but I do want to consider the higher RPM's.

So what do you think? 4.56 or 4.88's?

thanks...

4.88's hands down if you had the 3.4L V-6, more so especially with the 4 banger!

That's what I was originally thinking, since I have had those gears in an older 4Runner that I had.

I used to have an 85 4Runner and put some 4.88's on'er but the rpm's where I think to high.

So I was kind'a doubtful about it.

What tranny was in the 85? It may have had a different top gear ratio than what you have now. Anyway, I run 32" tall studded winters during the snowy season and with my 4.88's and 5-speed my revs are a little higher than the stock set-up but it's not that bad. (I think maybe 500 rpm more) It's also got a bit more grunt in fifth as well which would be especially good seeing as you have the 4cyl. You may also want to go to a bigger tire down the road as well which having the 4.88's will be a bonus.
