New Gauges

Does anyone know if you can get new gauges for an 88 pick-up or are they just universal?

Not sure what you're asking... Are you referring to:

- replacing the entire gauge cluster?
- replacing one or more gauges within the OEM cluster?
- adding aftermarket gauges?

He is referring to the actual guage cluster. I already explained the process to him, but will post it up here for reference, even though it has been covered a million times on here.

All guage clusters (within the correct year range for the truck) are plug and play and all compatible up until 1992, where they switched from the cable driven speedometer to the electronic speedometer. As long as you get the correct type of cluster for your truck, it is direct plug and play, and you can swap the mileage block from your stock cluster so that you can keep your mileage since that is important for registration of the vehicle. The only change that needs to be made to the truck, is that if you are going with an SR5 cluster on a non-SR5 truck (to get the tachometer usually), you need to switch the oil sending unit, which is a sensor that is threaded in to the engine block. The stock non-SR5's have a sensor that is there to monitor the oil pressure, but not send a reading to the cluster, but rather to throw the CEL if the pressure drops too low, with the SR5 cluster, you need to have the oil sending unit that sends the signal to the cluster for the oil guage. There is a rumor that if you hook up your SR5 guages to the stock oil sender it will blow your cluster, i do not know if this is true, but i would not chance it, besides your oil guage will not work unless you put the new oil sending unit in anyways. The oil sending unit that you need to purchase can be bought at any auto parts store from what i understand, ive heard that it is only like $15-$20 at Autozone, but i have not bought it for my truck yet, so i dont know first hand.

Does it matter if the cluster is froma V6 or 4 cyl?

I read in anothe rpost that this might change the tach? I don't see how really, RPM's are RPM's right?

I also noticed that my tach is kinda finnicky. It will rise and then slowly fall back to idle, sometimes it will stick at 1,500 or 2,00 when I know it is back to 1,000

Any suggestions?

As for the V6 and 4cyl deal, to my knowledge they are the same except for the marked redline, which really does not matter, just know your engines redline and be done with it...

As for your tach acting funny, maybe see if you can hook up to another cluster and rev the engine a bit and see if it is different, that way you can find out if it is the guage or something else. If not the guage, maybe its the sending unit for the tach, i dont know where the unit is physically located though, but it would have to be either of those two things.

NO it does NOT matter... castrolSI has COMPLETED the guage cluster swap, his truck is 22re and the cluster is from a V6... Read through this thread if you do not believe me...

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f115/doing-sr-5-gauge-cluster-swap-how-pictures-51800/

Oh and he mentions that the oil sending unit required is $26.99 at Autozone...

Oh and there were no V6's until 1988 anyways, so it only affects 88 and up, but it doesnt matter, they are compatible anyways, castrolSI proved it...

my tach redlines at 5750 so it must be a 22re tach. cool deal.

Thanks for the ideas.

As far as blowing the oil gauge, what would blow?

I looked at the unit and it seems very simple, not much to burn out. I didn't see any signs of distress, maybe I got lucky and didn't run it long enough with the stock oil sending unit.

like it says in that thread the tach will be off unless you mod it. i did see a write up a few years back about how to do this. so in other words its better to get the cluster for the motor you have
