New Color Matched Bumpers for a 2000 4Runner
My 4Runner currently has chrome bumpers and I REALLY want to go with color matched bumpers/bumper covers that have the 4Runner Highlander look. I want to go with the black matched grille too. I know it has to be possible; my question is where would I find these parts and where would I get some technical input from those who have done this?
I know I am probably not the first person to want to do this mod and I probably wont be the last one.

I don't know what color-matched fiberglass is but here's what I did and also thought of doing.
First, chrome can be painted. There are people here that have painted their chrome w/ rattle can with pretty good results (at least from what they say). I wanted a pro to do the work so a local body shop pulled the chrome bumpers, sand-blasted them, and painted them. The only issue w/ this is the front plastic valence cannot be painted (unless you want it to chip and peel not too long after the job) so you will still have the black plastic.
What I also thought of doing was buying limited or already painted bumpers and then repainting them to match my truck. This became a much more expensive proposition than what I did, which was more than rattle can.
I hope this helped. If it didn't, oh well...

Info on color matched bumpers...
Essentially, the REAL bumpers (the hard stuff) are underneath a fiberglass cover that is the same shape and size of the regular chrome bumpers. You see it in Camry's a lot and I know the Highlander edition of the 4Runner had that setup.

Ok wow...I am going to have to go look next time at work. There are 3 4Runners out there. My Black one with the crappy chrome bumpers, a Green 2WD with the color matched bumpers and a Desert Dune 98 limited. Hope my co-workers dont mind me looking really close. LOL!

i sanded mine down w/ 80grits(~60grits might be better) and use etching primer for best adhesion b/t metal and coats. the bottom part of the bumper or the lower valance can be painted, just use the right primer for plastic.

The kind of bumpers you are talking about actually are not fiberglass, they are various types of plastic. If they were fiberglass, you see cars all over the place with shattered bumpers. Pretty much only junk aftermarket bumpers for riced-out "sport compact" cars are made out of fiberglass.
