New 2nd Gen. 4Runner

Well its new to me at least. I just got a 94 SR5 and I have a few questions. It didn't come with the manual. I also have a 3rd Gen., they really are quite similar. First off, does the moonroof not flip up in the back? Even my '85 pickup can do that.

Also I've heard that the back window is a problem area. Right now it seems to be getting a little hung up near the top. It rolls fine till it gets to the last 4" or so. Then it starts to slow down and barely makes it to the top. I'm concerned that this will prematurely burn out the motor. I'm going to take it apart and see if I can figure out what's going on, but if anyone has had a similar problem, maybe you have some insight...?

Thanks Guys

On my 92, the moonroof did not elevate in the back. the rear window can be a pain, however it is not as bad as you think. if its your motor, get a used one from scrap yard. you can also use driver side window motors (85% sure thats the side), its a 15min fix. it sounds like the problem could be your motor, but first you should open up the tailgate and clean/lube the tracks and clean everything else. also you can search this as there are many many threads for the rear window/tailgate.

the rear window doesn't sound like the motor to me. It's more to do with the upper track. maybe try lubing the top part. something is preventing it from moving smoothly. Liquid soap works great.

Agreed, liquid soap or a thin layer of spray silicone on your finger and then work it into the track...atleast try this and see if it helps, if not then it may be your motor or something binding inside the door.

No, 2nd gen sunroofs don't tilt, weird, but they just don't.

Other than that, be sure the headgasket recall was done and you should be good to go!

My window is slow near the top also, even after I took it appart and lubed all the moving parts. I just figured that's the way they are and havn't woried about it. Been like that for the 3 years that I have hd it.

Instead of just lubing the stuff like mad, take the tracks out and see if they're gummed up with a mixture or dirt/dust and grease. Once you clean those and give it a good lube it should be fine. It would be nice to use a dry lubrication such as graphite... but I don't know how that would fare...

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'll try the lube thing first, but I think I probably need to take it apart.
That's too bad the moonroof doesn't flip up in the back. Has anyone put one of those wind deflectors on the front so its not so loud with the whole thing open?
What's the head gasket recall? How would I know if its been done?

Well I called the 800 number my 4runner had the HG done in 98. But they said something about a steering arm needing to be replaced. Anybody had this done? I'm going to search it right now...

my rear window started off with the same problems... got worse... and within 6 monnths didnt go up at all... The motor was the problem... I bought a rebuilt one off of e-bay for about 75 bucks... and now it works like a champ... the motor was fine but the gears and bearings in the motor wer shot... on its last leg the window would go ip 4".... slip back 2" and then go up another 4".... until it barely made it up.
