In need of mechanical aid

Hello folks. Here's the deal: I'm a poor college student that can't afford to do all the things I should do on my truck, I'm talking maintenence wise not modifications. The check engine light has been on for awhile and the code points to the O2 sensor... I checked them both with a voltmeter and they seemed fine. I don't want to buy one if I don't know which is the bad one and I'm not 100% that they are even the problem. There is definately a problem though, my truck isn't running quite right(weak). What I really need is someone that could help me out and try to figure out what the problem is. This would be a huge favor and I'd buy the person some but I can't afford to pay. I don't have a garage or the means to do it on my own while I'm going to school... I am used to having a garage and being able to mess around on my own. I don't have much experience other than putting a new starter in and basic maintenence. Anyways, if anyone would be so generous please let me know. I go to school in San Luis Obispo but I'd be willing to drive a little ways. Thank you very much.

Hello IGotaQ, so you go to Cal Poly huh? Dont know if I can help much since Im not familiar with the engines electrical system. I live in Santa Maria in case you need a place to work on your truck, I also have a 22re in my 4runner which I rolled a few weeks ago (working on the body right now...). Have you pulled the battery cable off to reset the ECU (to see if the check engine light still comes on)? I guess I would try that first

Since you have a voltmeter, check out the TPS. Common problem on the Toy and it will wind up causing error codes which I believe come from the o2 sensor since the readings go "out of range".
Search the boards for TPS and Roger Brown. You should come up with his website and how to check/set the TPS. Make sure and clean the o2 afterwards with something like throttle body cleaner to make sure it is in good shape.
Just an opinion. Good luck!

cabbage- yup I go to Cal Poly. Thanks for the offer on the place to help. I have already unhooked the battery and the code came back.
farenheit- thanks for the tip, I might do that. The problem is that I don't have much time to work on my truck so when I can make time it would be awesome if I had a better chance of getting it fixed.... sounds kind of weird but I can only make time every once in awhile.
Thanks folks keep 'em coming.

I use to have a 90 yota with the RE. I had that check engine light...so I replaced the sensor cause (TPS) the meter was giving a wierd reading that it wasn't suppose to. Well that didn't do squat beside steal $107.25. Well then a friend at NAPA hooked me up with front/rear O2 sensors. Put one in (front of cat), little more power and 2 mpg better mileage plus the check engine light went off. The rear that I replaced later didn't do anything but it might have been close to its due date.

Next time you come back up to Santa Cruz, shoot me an email. Maybe we can coordinate time to meet and do a little troubleshooting.

The O2 sensor should be replaced every 50K miles or so anyway, and you can get a universal one for under $75. Change the one in front of the cat if you have two. The one after the cat just monitors the cat condition and does not control fuel trim.
I picked up a few mpg on mine when I changed it.
What code are you getting exactly?
