Need help with speedo not working and dash is a christmas tree

Ok so the other day my speedometer stopped working and the brake, vsc off, trac off, abs, and check engine dash lights came on. I ran the code and came up with p0500 which is a speed sensor problem. I did some research and other people have had this problem. They have changed the speed sensor and the problem still existed. Out of all of those posts nobody has said what the cause of the problem was or what the fix was. If anybody can let me know what they had to do to fix this problem I would be greatly appreciative, before I dump a ton of money into it.
