Need help with my hitch wires

My 98 4runner hitch lights are not working and the HAYNES manual doesn't tell me much on how or where to trace them. can anyone tell me where to start? thanks.

Check the trailer convertor, it should be behind the large plastic panel on the driver side of the cargo area. If there is power going into it and none coming out replace it.

I learned all about this last year. Hopkins makes some inexpensive "black box" replacements and I recommend their LED 4 pin connector as you upgrade so at a glance at the hitch location you can see what functions are working and which are not. Search "trailer convertor" here or Google

okay from that other forum but it's on Yota Tech as well:

the hardest part of the whole process is all the trim removal of your interior to get to the black box. SO be sure before you tear it all apart that you visually check the wiring as it snakes up into the cargo area-could be as simple as a chafed wire coming out to the hitch.

Thanks eric-the-red I took the converter off and tested it and I was only getting power in but none out, so i will look into replacing it soon. Thank you Ron Helmuth i will take a look at those LED connectors.

My stock trailer module died, so I replaced it with the plug-n-play hopkins one. Super easy, no splicing necessary, as it uses all the same plugs as factory. Model 43415. Not bad for $32.

could be on the passenger side for a 98-it's definitely on the drivers side on 99s however-

did you get this solved 98blackSR5? just curious if you figured it all out. Took me some trial and error....

yeah i did thank you, I tested the black converter box and it was getting power in but not out so it was bad, I just don't have the money to fix it yet.

type in your VIN on a site like Toyota Parts Zone and let the diagrams show you which side it is on.

Having a similar issue, mine is a 98 and it was located in the passenger side rear corner near the tail light (Factory installed)
