Nope. The engine that you put in your 89 has to be the same year or newer. Plus the 22r is carburated where as the 22re is EFI.

A 22r and 22re are very simulliar but not the same. You get a little more horse power out of 22re. The intrenal workings are diffrent as well as some external and these things are not interchangeable.

The law vary from state to state. Check with DMV to see if you can swap an engine from older vehicle to newer vehicle.
other than that, go for it.

Just make sure you use the balancer and fly wheel for the motor you use. A friend of mine bought a reman motor for his 84 and the motor had the wrong oil pump on it. 85 they changed the oil pump, 85 and later the oil pump sticks out I think it is about a 1/4 to 1/8" further. It sucked when he put the balancer on and motor locked up I don't Know if you are carb. or injected, but also keep in mind if you are injected and the other motor is carb. there may not be a provison for a knock sensor. That is what I'am talking about just the little stuff that would drive a man to drink lots of beer.
Good luck!!!!!!!!
