When i bought my 4runner, it had 265x70x16 tires on it. i BELIEVE that that is not the stock size correct? I looked at the sticker on the doorjam and it says i need 225x75x15. well.. that wont fit obvously, cuz my stock rims are 16's.

My right rear tire is slowly leaking air, and i have minimal tread on my current tires (the ones listed above) so, i figure its time to replace them. I dont need a beefy ass tire or anything like that. This is my daily driver, and i want the smoothest, quietest ride possible that will be gas friendly.

What size/brand/etc do you recommend?

Is your truck a 3rd gen? Are you ever going off road with it? Do you drive alot in the rain?

Don't worry your size "IS" stock size.
265 is the stock size for Limited edition or option for SR5. 225 was standard for SR5 or base model. Therefore nothing worry about that...

For the advice on tire choice for 4runner OEM 16' rim, please please please don't do oversize tire. Just strickly follow the stock size. You will regret if you go with oversize one. No matter what the tire shop says, don't do it. This is per my own vivid experience. 4Runner rim is very very peculiar about balancing with tire already. If you go with oversize, it will be even more impossible to balance it properly.

regarding tire brand, of course, Michelin is the first one to consider to avoid/minimize the chance of getting defective one.

However, any brand like BFgoodrich, Goodyear are all decent enough. Just keep in mind that don't expect smooth/silent ride from off road tire...

I have a 1999 3rd gen SR5.

I DONT want an oversize tire.. i want whats going to be best for a daily driven car. I hardly drive in the rain because here in SoCal, it NEVER rains...

So LV... thanks for your input! should i go with a 225x70x16 ?? or 225x75x16 ?? (just basically go with whats on the sticker on the door jamb right??) and u are right.. i AM having balance issues with the tires that are on my car right now.....

Billabong... Lift IT, LOCK IT, put on some 35's! Just kidding. If you're using for a DD, listen to LV 4Runner. If you're not going to take it off road, leave the suspension and tire size the way they are.... My buddy's got the same truck you do, and he has problems with keeping his balanced all the time (he's running 265/75R16's). Just a thought....

the tires that are on it right now are 265x70x16 and i am having balance issues. since i need new tires, which of the two sizes i just listed should i get?

lol those are some small tires. hahah Your going to look like a ugly Base model 4runner. I think you need to use the haweka hunter balancing machine or what not.

Stick to the size you have on now (265x70x16), this is pretty standard size for a third gen and probably waht is was delivered with. 225/75 would be smaller and your speedometer would be off by 5%

If you don't go offroad tons of people recommend Michelin LTX M/S as a great long lasting tire. Stay away from Dunlups (I have had some out of round fom them). Brigdestone Dueler A/T Revo or BFG A/T is very popular if you do some offroad. Search and you will find tons of tire threads.
Make sure the use the correct adaptor to balance you new tires (I believe the adaptor name is Haweka for our lug centric wheels).

Its not hard to balance 31-32" tire. Stick with the 265's. 225's are gonna give you a funky look if you ask me. Get a set of Revo's from Les Schwabs or any large tire center. They'll have a balancing machine there and you'll be fine.

it doesnt really matter to me what my car looks like based on the tires. i gotta do whats more practical.

besides looks, is there going to be any difference in mpg/noise/ride quality between the 265x75x16 and then 225x75x16?

stick with 265/70-r16. If you get a good tire you will get a good ride. Remember your spare is the same size as your current tire. If you go smaller you might as well change the spare too.

Stick with the size you have now and go with the Michelins that have been suggested or the Revo's. If there is any chance of going off-road, Revo's are where its at! Or the BFG A/T's...but those will be noisier than a strictly street tire.

roughly 225/75 diameter is 29.3? inches, 265/70 is 30.6 inches, 265/75 is 31.6 inch (all on 16" rims). You spare is probably 265/70/16, so stick with this to pratical. This is/will give a nice ride.
From what people have tried here the 265/75 will be a tad slower over the 265/70 and maybe you will loose a little mpg. 225/75 might be a tad faster but you would cruise at higher RPM and possibly loose out on mpg again.

the main difference between a 225 and 265 is the contact area between the tire and the road. You may use the 225 70R16 if you want but your 4Runner won't be that stable during fast cornering or when it's rainy and the road is wet because there is less contact with the ground. Just use what the factory says, 265 70R16 and as for tire brand, my call for you is Bridgestone Dueler REVO.

For a nice quiet highway tire, I would go with the new Toyo Open Country HT.

If your 4Runner has factory 16" wheels, then it came with P 265/70R 16 tires.

The "P" stands for passenger car tire. They're a 4 ply tire, that was spec'd by Toyota, because of the soft ride.

Lots of people, including myself, go with a tougher tire that's able to take more abuse. Such as an LT265/75R 16 truck tire, the downside is a bit rougher ride.
