need ADVICE!!!!

Hi,
I'll try to keep this as short as possible. I installed a lift on my '98 Runner. I have SAWs upfront and OMEs in the rear. I didn't have a place to level the front so I decided to let the tire store crank the SAWs up. They were at the lowest setting and the tire place only had to crank them about half way. The CVs looked good, almost as good as they did when stock. I also had my new tires and wheels put on. Anyway, On the way home, my steering wheel was shaking after 40 mph. The shaking was the worst from 40 mph to 60 mph, but still was evident after 60 mph. Does anyone know why this is and if it is fixable. Also, to top off the day, I heard a rubbing sound as I turned into my garage. I took a look and saw the dreaded CV grease all over my right front wheelwell. I have to drive my Runner and was wondering if it is safe to drive it with a broken CV for a week. I appreciate any help anyone can give. Thank you..Acid

is it a broken CV joint, or just the boot? You will be find just driving with a blown boot...but then they wont just change the boot..they will want to replace the whole axle the longer you wait. if its a broken joint..then you might not wanna drive on it.

Hey Corey,

I think it's a broken CV because I don't think the drivlines are engaging when I push the 4WD button. I heard a faint click from the right side and that's it. When I drove a couple feet, I didn't feel that the 4WD was active. The thing that bothers me the most is the shaking of the steering wheel. I can't have that. So, what would happen if I drove the Runner with a broken CV? Thanks-Acid

I drove 2 weeks with a broken cv joint. You will here a loud clank clank clank when you turn, it sounds like its going to break. I had to have the left front axle replaced. My mechanic was able to find a place out of michigan that sold remanufactured axles for $175. The delaer price is $375 for a new one.

As far as the vibrations... I don't know about that one, maybe someone else can help you there

Did you get an alignment right after you did the lift, because it's required after a lift?

yeah, I had an alignment. I got everything done at 4wheelparts wholesalers. I had them do it because I thought they would know how to work on lifted vehicles.--Acid

If the shakings in the stearing wheel I am going to guess tire balance since you said you had new tires and wheels put on too, Since you still have the old wheels a quick test to be sure the CV 's not causing the vibration is switch the old tires and wheels back in since it wasnt shaking before with them installed (granted you still have old wheels). As for the Leaking CV's it may just be leaking due to a change in angle alot here including myself had leaking after a lift and I just did the quick band aide of c-clamping it and cutting the old clips off since they really are not that tight they just kinda hold it into a grove, if you take a closer look at it you will see what I'm saying.
