i don't think you're going to find any good synthetic for under $5 or so a quart. though looking on some oil forums i've heard about some green colored castrol which is supposedly fully synthetic and high quality yet cheap, but i have no solid info.

i run amsoil 10w40 -- $6.15 a quart at the local parts jobber. next time i'm going to order a case, as it's around $60 for 12 quarts.

The deal with synthetic is you pay up front, but then thats it. If you use Amsoi they suggest one oil change a year (with a filter change in the middle). Sounds crazy but a pile of folks do it that way (my bad self included).

Hard to get cheap and good at the same time.

With an older 22re engine i would use 20w50 in the summer heat. That goes for most of the older class 4 cyl motors. I would say from 1985 to 1995. Yes i am way off topic.

cheap synthetic is basically an oxymoron haha.

Besides, I personally dont think its worth it unless automaker says use it.

i heard good things about the Castrol synthetic mentioned above. its affordably priced at wally-world.

been using the quaker state semi-synthetic for the past 290,000 miles. so far so good.

I've had good results with Castrol Syntec. Most notably in the '83. I gained 1 MPG.

I use Valvoline Synthetic blend (only $2.50 a quart) and Purolator Pure One Oil Filter (about $5). Seems to work quite well.

The most I've seen Mobile 1 around here is $4.99/quart but I usually buy a case at Target or Costco and I usually pay about $23 a case.

There is an active law suit against castrol because the full synthetic oil has a petroleum base.I used it for years also. They will not get another dime from me.
