Might be Selling the 4Runner (what should I do?)
Ok well it would take a whole lot for me to sell the Runner, but I found a 94 Land Cruiser the other day and stopped in to check it out today. It's 4x4 with every option except leather. Already lifted via Old Man Emu and has an ARB bull bar on the front and Surco rack up top. But the MAIN kicker is, it has front and rear diff locks. They are asking $10,900 and it has a 173K miles on it. The exterior and the interior are in perfect shape aside from a few small hairline scratches in the paint. No paint or body work has been done to it that I can tell.
I don't know what to do. I really want it, but I'm not sure if it would be worth my while to sell the 4Runner for it. Give me some pro's and con's before I do something irrational.

LandCruisers are nice... But for a daily driver I'd rather have a 3rd Gen 4Runner. I had a 2003 LC which I loved, but it's a tank. Drives like one too. At least the 4Runner is somewhat nimble and better on gas. My '03 felt so top heavy, and I am sure the full time 4WD didn't help the gas situation either. I know my 03 had a loads more power than the older ones, and there probably wasn't that much difference in weight. So to sum it all up, the 4Runner feels like a sports car in comparison with the way an LC drives. On the plus side, if you pull stuff an LC will haul a trailer like it's not even there. Barely even dips in fuel economy with the trailer there becauset he engines are loaded with torque.

If you drive 1000 miles a month it will cost about an extra $40 a month in gas money, if you can afford that and like it, get it. Parts aren't much different pricewise for a LC than for a 4runner (unless you need a long block ). It's definitely faster than a 2nd gen 4r but probably a little slower than a 3rd gen 4r.
My 80 series had ~200k on it when I sold it and ran/drove/looked better than my 4r w/150k.

Alright thanks guys, I kinda figured that's what was going to be said, but the lockers are really tempting and the condition of the truck made it hard to not give a good consideration. I crunched some numbers to see if I could save some money if I could work a good deal, but there just is no easy or sure fire way to do so, so it looks like the 4Runner is staying with me for a while longer. I'm not unhappy with the Runner but at times I just want a change. Oh well, gotta start saving for some lockers.

Whats up with everyone selling there rigs lately? I say keep the runner, selling and buying a new car can be expensive. Im sureyou already have alot of money tied up in the 4runner already, why put it all to waste. KEEP THE 4R!!!

Your truck is pretty sweet man, especially for a college student. I'd say keep it and save for lockers or just keep your money cause you don't wana not enjoy college as much because your broke...
I'm in the same shoes as you, just with a rig 9 times worse and years older.
Goodluck on your decision,
Alex

i feel ya on the poor college kid role. that's me too. but there's some satisfaction to knowing you've worked hard to build your own rig, slowly but surely. you'll get it to where you want, in the mean time work on the most important part of wheeling - experience.

Yeah I sat down and figured out what all I had already done to my truck and I just don't think I could part with it anyway because of the blood sweat and tears that went into it. My ultimate goal when I set out was to buy the Runner, fix it up to what I wanted, pay it off, store it, buy another car to drive when I get out in the work force and store the Runner and turn it into a straight trail rig. So that's my plan and I think i'm gonna stick to it. Thanks for the help guys. Maybe I can talk pops into getting it for him so we can wheel together .
