Metallic Fluttering Noise

After a trip all over central Kansas my old 4 banger has started to make what I can only describe as a metallic fluttering sound. It only happens in a medium/low rpm band. If I go higher in the rev band it goes away, If I lug it a little in a high gear it goes away. My first inclination was something in the valve train, but upon futher reflection the timing chain slapping around would probably make the same sort of sound, the truck only has 84,000 miles on it.

Please Help!

sounds like a timing chain. mine makes the same noise at around 2-2400 RPM. Although, mine has over 150,000 on it. That sounds like low mileage for a timeing chain but that stil could be your problem.

Dose it make the same noise for a few seconds at start up.If so chain tensioner.Once oil press builds up it gose away.

Yup, it's the tensioner most likely. I had this same problem in my old truck with the 22R. It makes the noise at startup then goes away after about 30 seconds once the oil pressure builds up. The tensioner is basically a hard rubber boot and the timing chain will dig into it after thousands of miles. Thus, it can't properly tension the chain, so it makes noise. Time for a new chain and tensioner.

Well, it does it all the time, and it only goes away if I rev the engine, no matter how long it has been running.
